Just curious, how much / what type of exercise does your husky usually get?

We live in a townhouse, so Roxy doesn't really have a backyard she can play in. She gets at least 4 - 6 walks each day, and I try to take her on an adventure every weekend (this past weekend we walked a few miles at Ijams Nature Center).

I would really like to get a bicycle and a harness of some type to attach to the front of it (as seen at this link - http://www.flickr.com/photos/trojanllama/sets/72157594293795453/ - anyone ever seen anything like this?

We are lucky in that we have a large garden, so the dogs get plenty of exercise running around playing together. In addition, we run ours in harness in our local forest 2 or 3 times a week over a distance of 5-10 miles each time. We don't get much snow, so we use a wheeled rig:




On the rare occasions when we do get snow, we get the sled out

Im Jealous of you Raindog, My roxy gets tons of walks and outings on the weekends which include hiking etc......

When biking I just loop the line through itself at the center of the handle bars. It takes a bit of coordinated movements when coming to a stop, but it's really not a problem.

If the roads aren't mudded up with snow and melting slush, they get biked two to three times a week. Once the overnight lows reach the 50's/60's towards summer, we stop biking altogether.

As far as regular exercise, it's 85% running with 15% weight conditioning. They typically get one day off per week during the winter since we work so hard. Most days include a .75 mile flat out sprint in less than four minutes to Cosmo's (another Husky) house where we pick him up. Then we jog lightly for another mile while stopping often to piss, poop and smell. After that mile it's tough cardio for another mile as we alternate between one minute sprints and one minute walks. Next we do at least another mile of fast jogging/running back to Cosmo's to drop him off. On days when I don't take Jasmine (Bernese), we add another mile or two of jogging before returning home.

AND... we have individual behavior training sessions in the afternoons. But not every dog every day, we alternate that stuff.

Summer includes weekend hikes of 5-15 miles with 1500'- 3500' elevation gain at mostly 45+ degree angles. Those are awesome.

I work at a Dog daycare so on days i work they come with me. They run around and hang out with everyone. On days i'm off we go to the dog park and then to the lake for some swimming. On average it's about 3 hours a day i spend with just them doing "dog" stuff. I actually just bought a really nice pulling harness off the internet and am going to start running them with it to the park and back with either a scooter or bike (saves on gas! )

But we do something everyday. Walks don't do much for mine. If anything it just makes them crazier.

Wow, I really feel like I need to "up our game" as far as exercise goes!! At the same time, Roxy seems to be a little more "chill" than a typical description of a husky, but I still want to work more activity into her life...

well for us, I walk them for 5-7 min in the morning before I go to work and they get caged and when ken gets home he walks them for about 20 min and we do another 20 min at night. now that it gets dark so early the dog park has to be put on hold till the weekend. not to mention we have 2 huskies so they also keep themselves busy with playing when they are not locked up. once a month we have a husky meet up and they get to go crazy and in the summer I hope to tag a long on some big hikes with them as well. they seem happy with what they get and we do more when there is time.

Wow Jenn, if that's still how much exercise your two get now I'm amazed you are still sane and have a house left. LOL

Just to keep mine relatively sane I do a 2 mile walk in the morning, 1 mile walk in the afternoon, a 15-20 minute play and running session in the yard (mostly full running), 5-15 minutes of training, and a 20 minute walk at night just before bed. Anything less than that and my husky is just crazy!

mine gets an hour at the dog park every day, and honestly that wears him out for the whole day! we live in a duplex so we have a dog tie out for him since it's not fenced and he spends some time out there, but definitely prefers lounging on the couch

Mine are so spoiled and so easy-- they entertain each other. They get maybe 1-2 hours outside on the runner or exploring a day (sometimes it's less) and then terrorize each other around the house and play tag at their leisure and they're happy

We're starting daycare on Mondays though because the daycare we like is doing a 50% off special! We can do BOTH dogs for a FULL day of daycare for $25. I can't so no to that and it's SO good for them, so I'm game We'll continue to do that until the deal is over and daycare wears them out for a good day or two.

Koda has been going to daycare since he was 11 months old 3 days or more a week. I now work at one, so he goes with me 3-5 times a week. So that is 8 hours of play time for a day- poops the bugger out! We also do a 2 mile jog in the AM or PM, and hikes twice a week and usually the dog park Tuesdays and Saturdays.. along with just "for fun" runs. We bike with him sometimes, but we don't have a lot of areas where it isn't dangerous to do so.

You know, I've wondered if having a husky pull you that way would require significantly less effort on the human runners part. Does it?

Whenever I run with my sibe I hold the lead normally (like I would on a walk) but if doing canicross requires less effort on my part I might try it and go running more often.

yep its about the same still and we now leave them on the lower half of the house when we go to work uncaged and the worse they have done is eat the blanket on the sofa. we have also added bikejoring once a week as well as still trying to get to the dog park once a week and they play with each other and we chase them around the back yard as well.
