leash - DIY Dog Leash Empty
PostSubject: DIY Dog Leash   leash - DIY Dog Leash EmptyMon Nov 11, 2013 12:37 pm

I was just wondering on how many users here thought or done a DIY Dog leash. I live near a huge field and I want my husky to be able to run out there. however its not fenced and near a busy street. So what I thought of a training leash but they were not that long and they were a bit pricey.Idea I thought wow I can just make my own. so that what I did.  I went to my local hardware store and bought a 50ft rope and a "clip" the ones that normally are used for leashes. I wanted to know what is the best way to tie, clip, pinch it together? I will keep on reading around and ill try to add photos on how I do mine.

That's what we did for a lead for Bode. We just bought a 75' yellow braided nylon rope (works good for water too) and tied a clip to it. Honestly, I don't know much about knot tying, so I just messed around with the knot until I felt it was secure.

A knot will generally weaken the rope, but I don't think your dog will exert enough force to make a difference.

I crimped a 50' poly line for Ajax's beach lead, but you could always tie a bowline knot to secure the clip.

I suggest adding knots. We put a ton of knots into our running gear to be able to easily grab and hang onto the gangline if the dogs tangle.

you could use a type of fishermen's knot to tie the rope to the clip. The more tension on the rope there is the tighter the knot gets.

paracord 550 has a tensile strength of 550 lbs. I'd still recommend something like a cobra weave to it to add it some extra strength and girth. Here's a link that'll show you how to make one... here's a ton of other resources online I just found this one doing a google search for "paracord dog leash" http://www.instructables.com/id/Paracord-Dog-Leash/

yeayh, i did this kind of leash, but i want it 50 ft, so i don't think i would have enough time to make a 50ft long cobra weave

Ah. ya that's a bit more work Smile I don't know if paracord wouldn't be something you look into still, but in the end it's what you feel comfortable with.

Our ganglines are made from the $2 paracord from a local home improvement store.

we got a braided nylon rope for Jasper that's about 1" to 1.5" in diameter, it's super lightweight but thick enough that if you grab it it won't cut or burn your hands. We use it when we go in the woods to tether him to me because I found the paracord was too thin and if he pulled at all it would cut into my stomach and bruise but the thicker rope distributes the pressure more easily.

Here's the leash I have made for my last three huskies.
https://www.itsahuskything.com/t2000-bodhi-busts-his-leash?highlight=bodhi+s+new+leash
The webbing cost less than $3, and the 'biner was about $10.
You also could use snap links from a hardware store that cost $1.50- $2.
I don't like them because they have a smaller space inside and are hard to get on and off the webbing.

Hahh, you're saying about prices. In our country everything is too expensive. Like eggs costs 4-5$ , milk 2-4$ , and when you talk about nylon webbing. I buyed 2 meters of black, not really thick nylon webbing, which costed me 4$, so to make 50 ft (15 m), it will cost me 30$ and a clip, which i don't know where to get.

I don't know about overseas shipping for this.
I'd go to a climbing store.

leash - DIY Dog Leash 88494210 Here is a paracord leash I did a while back. It's a single cobra knot. Believe me when I say, it get's easier to do once you get a rhythm going. Paracord itself is cheap, and you can also make a matching paracord collar to go with it!
