| Sara, i did not look at this thread as i thought it was the older one, just saw you on the hijack talking and came to look. Sorry to read this but im with Megan, take him to an eye doc to really know what is going on. we did that with Sierra to find out what she had and it was an easy check up for them to do. to bad you are not in CO yet as we have a good doc to see. _________________ |

| Sorry about Bode Sara! If it turns about to be cataracts at least he has you to take care of him.
I agree with Megan and Jenn about the second opinion even if it ends up being the same diagnosis. Seeing the neurologist with Nikolai gave us the piece of mind knowing the information was right and from someone who see's things like cataracts everyday. Hopefully their is one around your area! |

| Thanks Erica. Definitely thinking about a second opinion. Seems like there's plenty of options around, just have to figure out what is the best option. |

| Good luck! Hopefully your vet was wrong, and that he doesn't have cataracts. Good luck with everything, I'll be thinking of Bode! |

| Thanks! We have found an opthamologist, just have to call next week to make an appointment. They're not open Fridays. |

| So we had the opthamologist appointment today. It went well. Basically the type of cataract Bode has is the kind that is least likely to grow and should not affect his vision to any extent. Of course, there is always a chance, but the Dr. doesn't think it's likely. It was an expensive appointment just to have him look a little bit and then a quick chat, $130, but I would have paid double that for the peace of mind it has given me.
He still would like to see Bode back in 6 months just to monitor them. |

| Sara, Thats great that you got the best news possible with this condition. I'm really happy that it most likely will not affect his vision and that you don't have to worry about it as much as you did think! I must be going to the vet to much cause I just thought $130 was a great deal! |

| Haha, I guess it's just all in perspective, after the $400 at the E Vet for Myles kitty this weekend, it was just a lot on top of that. I knew that a specialist appointment was going to be more than a normal vet (and our normal vet is VERY affordable) but it was $90 for the exam fee and another $40 for the eye pressure check. It just seems like a lot for a couple looks into his eye with a light.
But like I said, it was totally worth it knowing more about the condition and I would gladly do it again. |

But like I said, it was totally worth it knowing more about the condition and I would gladly do it again. Once, long ago, my first husky had ringworm. Since I also had something that I now know to be seborrheic dermatitis, I immediately made an appt with derm. He came in, listened briefly, ran his fingers through my scalp, gave me script for tar shampoo and steroid liquid and left the room - 5-7 minutes, tops. Two weeks later, recheck. 2-3 minutes tops. Couple hundred dollars (this was 40 years ago). When I mentioned this to my Dad, he asked - did he fix the problem. I said yes. He said, you were not paying for his time, you were paying for his expertise. Huh? What? OK...still irks me. And now they tell me it's psoriasis... |

| Looking closely at Mylo's left eye, my girl noticed a kind of tiny grey-ish spot on his eye. She had told me about this in the past but I forgot about it. She says its always been there like that. Do you guys think this will be a problem in the future? This is the best pic I could take of his left eye. I didn't want to keep flashing his eyes too much. Sometimes I think I see something but then I'm not even sure. Do you see something? left right

| I see what you are talking about, I can't tell if it's the lighting or not though, and I would get it checked out just so you can be sure. Your normal vet might have to recommend you to a specialist to get a full diagnosis. Klaus has had a few things happen with his eyes that have scared me. My vet doesn't feel it's anything serious but he said he could recommend me to get some tests done. I enrolled in pet insurance a week ago just incase, so I feel your concern :/ |

| You really need to get the opinion of a vet who can really get a good look at the eye. Both of my previous dogs had juvenile cataracts which you could see in person but would have been really hard to get to show in a picture. _________________ |

| Yeah I knew that pics would probably useless. His next vet visit is Feb 2nd for 3rd round of shots. I'll make sure to bring up the eyes. If it was a serious thing I'm sure the vet would've noticed something by now. (he's been to the vet a lot already) |

| Another way to guess if it's cataracts or not is when light hits the eye, you will notice a red-pink reflection if it is cataracts. |

| You will need to see an ACVO Vet (Vet Ophthalmologist) to get a proper diagnosis. Cataracts develop on the lens of the eye, to see the vet will need to dilate the pupil and look through a series of lenses and lights not too unlike a human eye exam. A cataract looks like a gray/white crystal deep in the pupil. Our Rogue was just diagnosed in May 2014- eyes are the Achilles Heel of the breed, which is why it is so imperative breeders annually screen the eyes of their breeding stock- |

| I've seen that there are two threads on here regarding hereditary juvenile cataracts but I haven't seen anyone post after surgery. So long post, here we go. Unfortunately our Klaus was diagnosed with juvenile cataracts in both eyes this week We're absolutely devastated to hear this, it happened so quick. Monday night we noticed his pupils were different sizes and it quickly became red and irritated to where he was squinting. We took him to the emergency vet and they just diagnosed it as uveitis and gave us an anti inflammatory (oral & drops) and some pain meds. We followed up with our primary vet the next day, and from there he recommended us to an ophthalmologist. Blue Pearl, I know it is in several states. So they said he has prominent cataracts in his right eye (the one that was irritated) and could see it starting in the left eye as well. She feels that the right eye has progressed enough for surgery, and that the left had visible cataracts and will continue to get worse as well. We have a two week check up to see if the left has gotten worse, and were prescribed more drops to try and get the inflammation in the right eye down. at this appointment she will talk to us about the surgery further. I can see cloudiness now in his right eye, so I can tell it progressed quite fast. I've noticed he has been a little more skittish lately, I'm guessing that has to do with his sight. Haven't seen him bump into anything (more than his normal clumsy self). We had also seen a neurologist the day before because I noticed him twitching. A very prominent twitch of the head and eyes, and it happens right before he tries to lay down/sleep. At first before he was diagnosed I thought it might be neurological, however the neurologist said from an initial examination that he looks healthy, and the twitching could be from pain meds. However... in his examination he mentioned that when he shined light into his eyes he couldn't see to the back. So I'm guessing this was from the cataracts, and probably good enough for a second opinion? I just fear a second opinion at this point is going to be costly to hear the same results. The twitching has calmed down a bit now, not noticing it as much so I'm just keeping an eye on it for now. Eventually if it persists the neuro recommended an MRI :/ I can't believe we've done 4 vet visits in the past 4 days. I'm beyond worried about his eye sight. I just can't imagine our silly playful boy not being able to enjoy his life as he does now. Not to mention the recovery is pretty extensive and getting weeks off work is going to be more than difficult. So, I'm hoping at this point maybe someone else will have some advice for us? |

| Haley, I am so sorry that you and Klaus are going through this. I am not of much help, and this is a way to bump the thread in hopes someone else sees it and has some advice to give. I do know there was a member here over a year ago with an older husky with diabetes getting the surgery through Blue Pearl. For the life of me I do not remember his nickname, but his dogs name was Robin, maybe search threads with Robin in it? she did have a successful surgery and like I said she was older, so it may be slightly different than what Klaus is going through. Also, did you contact your breeder, they need to know what's going on. I am guessing, that by breeding standards, they should not breed the pair that produced Klaus again.
I wish you and Klaus luck, he is such a handsome guy, and please keep us updated on his progress. |

| Well, Al doesn't remember but he's looking. This thread, however was an interesting aside which I presume you've seen from your comment about "both threads". ... and nope, I can't find any such thread either. ... and search is disgusting, I just looked at a thread that mentioned glaucoma (figuring it might have been in there) and now I can't find anything!! Literally, a search for any word comes back with "Nothing has been found". _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |

| Thank you for looking Al! I'm 99.9% sure it was you that helped this gentleman, I'm going to try and jog your memory, haha. This gentleman was "older" cuz I remember you guys joking about something age related, his husky was also older and diabetic, name is Robin, who had trouble with her eyesight for quite some time. Surgery was planned at a hospital located quite a distance away, first one was cancelled due to Robins health (I think it had to do with certain numbers that were too high and was related to the diabetes) and we all followed this thread because it was so touching/heartwarming that this dog was going to be able to see again. Surgery did happen and I think some updates were even posted. Was one of those threads where I actually got tears in my eyes at the happy ending/love from her owners.
I'm at work so it's harder for me to search ATM but hopefully I was able to jog your memory ? |
