So Orion is 6 months old, I have taught him the commands he'd need to know to bikejor and once he turns 18 months I'm going to want to introduce him to actually pulling the bike.


He is VERY energetic(it's a husky thing heheh) and even on our walks all he wants to do is run and pull, it's his favorite thing. If I do run with him for a while he's clearly happier than me walking him, he definitely enjoys it more than trying to pull my hand out on the walks
Right outside my house we have a small park with a perimeter of like, what, 300m or so, so it's not very big. I also think it will be good to get him used to the bike itself before I get him to pull it.

I'm wondering what you think,if he would be fit, at this age, to be tied to the bike loosely enough so that I'd be slowly cycling and he'd be jogging/running beside the bike, but not actually pulling it or having any sort of weight resistance???

Most of the recommendations I have gotten are to wait to at least a year before doing anything like that because they are still growing and they can injure themselves and put stress on growing bones and joints. If you have some were fenced in you could run around with him outside off leash and just let him run and play so he can slow down and stop as he wants to.

Elise hit the nail on the head, no structured running of any kind until at the very least 1 year. He won't stop when he's tired, and could do severe damage to his joints and growth plates. Unstructured running and romping in grass is fine, he will stop when he feels the need.

If you're having trouble expending his puppy energy, try mental stimulation. A good training session will wear his furry little butt right out.

thanks for the advice I'll wait then. It's not an energy problem really just trying to get him used to the bike, as he is a bit scared of it when he sees me on it in the back yard. I'll try just getting him used to the presence of it then for a while

One hint when you do start with him...have all your gear (helmet, gloves, whatever) either on you or within arms reach when you first attach him to the bike. I didn't the first time, walked away to get it, Ami tried to follow me...and crash! Dog and bike were a very rattly, clangy mess...needless to say, Mr. Dog is very wary of the contraption Mom to which he is latched

Well I would start getting him used to the bike now. First have it out let him sniff it give him treats, then wiggle it a little and give treats when he is used to that start walking it around him give treats ( you me see where I am going with this) and then get to you biking around with him in the back yard. Take every step slow and make sure he is comfortable before going to the next step it might take a few weeks. And then I would keep doing it every few weeks until he is old enough to start biking he should be very comfortable with the bike by them.
