Hello all! I have a question regarding crating my pup.

Odin is 3 months two weeks old. Due to me being able to bring him to work and my boyfriend and my schedule not coordinating, he is with someone at all times unless the boyfriend and I are out somewhere the pup cannot go. Usually this is for about 3-4 hours max at random intervals during the week.

Here is the breakdown because that sounds confusing.

Monday, Tuesday, Friday: Boyfriend has work, gets up at 4:45, I get up at the same time to let Odin out when he is getting ready for work. Odin goes to the bathroom, goes back in crate and we both go back to bed until 6:45 when I get up for work. Odin comes to work with me.

Wednesday, Thursday, I have work, Boyfriend is off. Odin doesn't wake up until 6:45 when my alarm goes off and he (and I) wake up. Boyfriend takes him outside while I get ready for work. Odin goes back in the crate and they go back to sleep until boyfriend wakes up later that day.

Saturday, Sunday, Boyfriend has work, I am off. Same thing as Monday except Odin usually sleeps in a little later because I do not have an alarm that goes off that day.

My question to you (if you got through all of that) is would it be beneficial for Odin to spend one day a week alone (Friday) so he can get used to being crated for 8 hrs during the day if for some reason I am no longer able to bring him to work with me? Or would this cause some separation anxiety issues?

I am really lucky to be able to bring him along with me but I fear that when he reaches his teenage years he may get a bit more rambunctious than is acceptable in a workplace.

I personally don't want to leave him alone for so long at such a long age but the boyfriend feels like it would be a good idea to get him accustom to it.

We have left him alone before for 6-7 hours once when we took my parents out to meet his parents and Odin did fine and was not crying when we got back.

I think if you are going to do this, the sooner the better. Just get him use to it. I don't see a problem leaving him one day a week for this amount of time. I think all of us have had to leave our Huskies for long periods of time. Just make sure as he grows, the size of his crate grows with him. Think of it from his point of view, would you want to spend 7 hours in there. We went out and bought the crate that could house Great Danes, St. Bernards and large, large breeds. We put our two boys in there. They love it, gives them room to play, stand up and walk around, and stretch out room.

Thank you for the advice. I have the biggest crate that I could find. It has a divider so I can section the crate off until he grows into it.
