PostSubject: titan doesnt chew her food.   titan doesnt chew her food. EmptyThu Jul 11, 2013 9:50 am

Normally when I get up in the morning I take Titan outside to go potty then bring her back in an feed her while I make some coffee or do something else. This morning about an hour after she got done eating we were playing outside and she started gagging like she was gonna throw up, she walked over into the grass and threw up. Almost none of her food was chewed up and she started eating it again. I took her back inside and fed her a little bit more so she didnt starve while we were at work.

Is this normal?

If not, how do i get her to start chewing her food?

you can get bowls that make the food spread out, it wont necessary make him chew her food but it will help him slow down and that may help him throwing it up after wards

Stryker does the same thing if he doesn't chew his food. Does she eat really fast? If so they make bowls with an object in the middle to make them slow down, or you can just place a really big rock in the middle of her bowl so she has to slow down and eat around it

I might just separate her food, right now I give her two 1/3 scoops in the morning lunch and after work. Maybe I can just give her 1 and then 30 minutes later give her another.

This is totally normal and using slow feed techniques may slow down the rate that they eat but generally does not get them the actually chew.

There are a couple similar threads on this topic already:

Swallowing treats

Not chewing his food

Its true, most dogs don't chew their food. I know people that have tried giving slightly larger kibble so they have to chew it instead of really tiny kibble. That might help.

If she is eating too much too quickly you can always spread out the food on the ground or crate. Or get one of those kong weeble wobble toys (especially great if she is in the crate) so she can eat the kibble slowly.

You don´t have to worry about that. Dogs do not chew their food they twine it.
