Hello all,

I just rescued a husky/Akita mix from some neglectful owners. Now, I've heard that Huskies are very intelligent, but I can't help but think mine is partially brain dead (in a loving way). Now, I trained my 7 month old Corgi mix from an 8 week old puppy, and he learned FAST. I just don't know if I'm being too expectant of a dog I've only had for a couple weeks, but it seems like he forgets everything as soon as our session is over. It takes a few tries every day for him to remember sit, come and stay, but after that is over he acts like we didn't even go over anything in the first place. Is the old adage "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" true? He's about 4 years old, so maybe he's just had an entire life of neglect and poor training that he needs to get over. Is it easier to train a puppy than an older dog? Do I have to give up and get him to a professional? He's frustrating me and I'm losing patience, but I'm not going to give up on him.

The adage definitely is not true, you don't have to give up and you don't necessarily have to take him to a professional for obedience. I personally think it's easier to train an older dog because puppies have worse ADD haha

He could just not be interested in obedience right now, but don't give up! Giving up will show him that he can get what he wants without listening to you. He's still new and he's still trying to figure out WHY he should listen to you, huskies and akitas are both known for being stubborn. It took me like two weeks before Snoopy would do what I asked him, outside of training session, and not just stand there and look at me like I was stupid. Try not to get frustrated and keep your sessions short so he doesn't get bored. Getting frustrated will make him want to create distance between himself and you because that's a mindset that's unpleasant to work with. Patience is key. Do lots of bonding exercises in between, like playing games, hand feeding, and walks. I used to give our GSD massages and she loved it, I started doing it with Snoopy and he loves it too! Good luck!

Kay didn't know anything when i got her and it took months for her to learn things. But now she learns new things pretty quick and enjoys training sessions. So just give it time and have patience. Even though that's really hard to have. xD

Yes, just keep at it I actually find training puppies easier in some way? Yes, they don't have the attention of an older dog, but they're also more enthusiastic. I've found older dogs to be less amused with our silly human games.

How long has he been with you?? What methods are you using to train? What treats?

There are lots of different reasons why he wouldn't be listening to you. I would rather train an adult over a puppy any day.
