| Subject: Pool Cover issues..... Wed Jun 05, 2013 6:51 pm | |
| So my puppy, Jago, is doing something I have never had an issue with before. We currently have 4 dogs that run around the property, but other dogs have come over, and this has never happened with any other dog! I don't know what to do! We have a large pool in the yard, it has an electric pool cover that holds the weight of a full grown man. We can actually walk across it. Mind you, it can break and it's not for fun, but it's peace of mind knowing my 4 year old son won't drown if he falls on the pool cover. Anyway, Jago, turned 5 months yesterday, has gotten into the habit of running across the pool cover! He is chasing the other puppy, who is about 7 months old, and she doesn't go across the cover anymore but Jago still does! He gets a super happy grin on his face and darts across it! We call him and praise him once he is off and say "good, off", we try to verbally correct him with stern "no" when he is on the cover. But we aren't always outside to catch him 100% of the time. He runs across it so fast even if we are watching, he's off it by the time we can say no!! It's like running across a large water bed! I do think it'd be fun but that's besides the points. 2 days ago it got worse...... He has started to POOP on the pool cover in the middle of the pool!!! He did it again this morning. Now, this is my parents property, not mine. My dogs stay there when I am at work so that everyone can play and they don't have to be kenneled for a long period of time. Any suggestions on how to train the puppy to 1) not go on the pool cover and 2) stop pooping on it!! It's over an acre of fenced in land and the pool is surrounded by stone and fountains, so it's impossible to fence in the pool. Imagine a Sunset magazine back yard - that's what we're dealing with. So my parents want it to stay nice and here I have this crazy husky/malamute puppy running across the pool cover and pooping all over it!!! He's going to lose his running in the back yard privileges if he keeps this up...what do I do?? thanks in advance! Oh, and here is the little stinker a month ago when he fell in the pool. I actually took him and and got him used to the water and showed him where the 'exit' was, in hopes that if he knew it was water then he would stop running across...no luck there, but he does like the water! |
