Hello. I am a proud parent of a 4-month old husky. I am a little...a lot confused about the right food to feed my boy. The breeder had him on Purina puppy and once I got him i gradually changed him to Avoderm Chicken & Brown Rice from a store associate's recommendation. He had loose stool from the time we got him and even when he was completely switched to the Avoderm. After so much research, I tried TOTW Pacific Stream and he's been on it for about a month now and stools are perfect. I figured grain-free is what agrees with him. After a visit with a vet this past weekend I was then told that he needed to be on large breed puppy food to prevent joint issues later on. This is what is really confusing me. I've researched a lot on the internet, books, even the AKC website says that huskies are a medium size breed. I seem to have a difficult time finding a grain-free, large breed puppy food. I'm thinking of just sticking with the food he's on & just make sure not to overfeed since a big part of me still believes that he's not a large breed dog but then I don't want to make the wrong decision and my boy could suffer joint issues later. He just turned 4 months this past Saturday and he is 32lbs. Please help!

Huskies are not large breed dogs, and honestly most vets really aren't well versed in canine nutrition. TOTW is a great food, and if you're getting good results from it there is absolutely no reason on earth to switch. The way to avoid joint issues with Huskies is to not over-walk them and not make them do structured running (ie bikejoring, jogging on a hard surface) until they're at least a year old.

Meredith is spot on. Huskies are a medium breed dog. If he's doing well on the food, stick with it. Another tip for not doing joint damage would be to only walk him 5 minutes per month of age. So if he's 4 months old now, limit to walking him no more than 20 minutes at a time.

Thank you for the helpful responses. It makes me feel better staying with his current food. Less guilt. Lol. I will definitely keep that rule in mind 5 minutes per month of age. He just got his last set of shots this past Saturday and I can't wait until he's free to walk with me along with my other dogs.

Yes, Huskies are medium size breed.

Joint issues and skeletal development issues are more regard for the large breed puppies in terms of puppy food.

For a medium size breed puppy, if you are going to feed an all life stage dry dog food, check the Ca:P ratios and make sure they are close to 1.2:1, no higher than 1.5:1.

My breeder feeds large breed puppy, but I think the main reason was because it had glucosamine and some other vitamins added. Thanks for the info about the ratios. That helps me a lot too!
