Subject: Why can't people mind their own beeswax? Fri May 24, 2013 11:11 am
Okay, so had to vent about this.
Dizzy does this weird, silly thing, that I'm working to get rid of, when he sees another dog coming towards us, he hits the deck and lays down. Then, when its about 1-2 feet away, he springs up and is full play attack mode. It almost looks like when a border collie is stalking an animal. So this morning at 5:30, he does this, and the lady walking the other dog says to me, "you should teach him to sit. You can teach him to do it without even asking, him. It's called automatic sit, I'm a trainer." I said, nicely I might add, "Actually, I am purposefully NOT teaching him to sit, because I plan on showing him, and I don't want him to sit in the ring." She responds with, "Well, you don't want him to be submissive in the ring either." UM, seriously? Submissive? What on earth gave her the idea he was laying down because he was submissive I can't say. Was it the ears forward, tail up, the back legs underneath ready to spring up, or the intense play growl coming from him? Couldn't tell you. My response wasn't too nice, but keep in mind, it was 5:30 am, and I had only had a little coffee. I said, "If you think he's being submissive you aren't reading his behavior and body language at all. He is stalking your dog, the same way a border collie stalks a cow." Then I walked away. Oh, and her dog looked like a boarder collie mix. I've had more "trainers" come up to me since getting Dizzy, then I thought I would ever meet. And most of them don't have a clue.

People who dish out advice to make you feel like they are superior to you piss me off to no end. I would have said the exact same thing most likely. It's like some stranger coming up to you out of the blue and telling you how to raise your child.

I've had to say to several people, "Just because I have a puppy, doesn't mean I don't know what I'm doing. This isn't my first rodeo." I wanted to ask her if this is how she picks up clients lol.

Apparently! New York is a 'fake it til you make it' kind of place too, so that lady could have woken up this morning and decided she wanted to be a dog trainer. I'm guessing if she was out there at 5:30 with all of us other working stiffs, she doesn't make her living that way.

Ya i hate people.. I was in petsmart last week.. And i bring koda in their to look around somtimes.. Well there was a rep from blue buff there, and she was playing with koda and talking in this child voice looking at him and she goes "and you got to tell your daddy that you should try some blue buffalo its perfect for you".. ( like really just talk to me) im not knocking the brand but people are nuts.. Then i told her he used to be on it but had problems with his stomach on it.. Then looks back at koda talking in the same voice to him again "well maybe you should tell daddy to give it another try" soo we keep walking through store and a lady that works there who i guess trains there too, starts walkin up to him and blue buff lady is talkin to her. And petsmart lady goes there is my buddy! And blue buff lady asks o does he train here and i said no i take him somewhere else. The trainer lady said i just see him in here all the time he is my buddy.. ( inesert eye roll here) so then she tries to get him to sit for treat and he wouldnt listen to her he kept jumping up on her. She was saying sit in the baby voice like the bb lady.. (Im sorry you need to sound a little more firm when giving commands... Remember she is a trainer) well she was getting frustrated so i told him to sit and he did in a second.. I honestly dont know if i will go back there... I just felt uncomfortable. Im trying to shop and they litteraly were talkin to eachother for 5 minutes petting koda and i just wanted to leave..

Oh yes people do this to me too! Looking at Dizzy, "what's your name? how old are you? where are you from?" It weirds me out every time too. He actually turns around now whenever he hears the word cute. Whenever were out people always say, "oh how CUTE" He thinks his middle name is cute I think...

you are automatically an expert in everything if you stay at a Holiday Inn Express. They have a ton of these commercials. Here are a few.

Something similar, at the dog park the other day some lady comes up to me and Link, who is wet from swimming so looking a lil depleted, and says "who's starving you you poor thing?" and then shoots me a demon look.
Turns out, she's selling homemade dog biscuits and that was her attempt to lure me in. *sigh*

I took Nanook to the feed store today for the first time and of course he was super excited. Every time I would get him calm someone would come up to us and talk to him in an overly excited high pitch voice and get him going, then tell me I really should teach him not to jump on people...how about you talk to him in a normal voice and not flair your arms around like a monkey....

Great sales pitch, "you suck at taking care of your dog. I hope my opinion bothers you enough that you buy my homemade biscuits"
Trailtoad - I hear you, that happens to me all the time. Or when he gets mouthy and I tell him 'off' and people keep playing with his muzzle and tell me he's teething.

I love when i tell someone they can pet the dogs as long as they dont jump if they jump you have to step back and all you get is "oh thats ok i dont mind the jumping on me!" Well maybe you dont and really i couldnt careless but my three year old nephew isnt going to be trampled by the dogs nor is my 85 year old grandmother so we are working on not jimping unless your told therefore when they jump you dont aww and continue petting you back off like i asked you.

Exactly why it's taking forever for me to get Lucian to stop biting, and jumping on people. I tell Lucian to stop biting, and people say it's okay. GRRR. I don't understand why people don't get that I'm trying to train the dog NOT to do that. He won't do it to me anymore, cause I never let him get away with it in the first place. Now if everyone else would just do the same.

We have quit going to petsmart because the trainer here gave us ear full about how our dogs were going for the kill with a dog in the store. The owner complained to the trainer.. The other dog was a GSD mix I think and my dogs had play with him sat the dog park before. My dogs were just playing the way huskies play we all know that they play rough. We took our business to Petco after the encounter with the trainer. We even took them to training classes there with the other trainer at petsmart she has since left for personal reasons.

Ditto. People always try to tell me how to train my dogs. Especially at the dog park it's always funny too because my dogs listen to me pretty well while these other people's dogs are running rampant and not listening whatsoever. It's the moment where I like to go 'and who needed training advice from who?'

I feel your pain. People can be so dumb. People will always call Phoenix a baby and when I tell them she is actually an adult, they will actually look at me like I'm stupid and ask "really?" as if I'm lying or don't know my dog's age. They will ask me her breed as well and when I say she is a Husky people will go "oh, what's that other breed that kind of looks like that" I will reply "Malamute?" They will say "yeah! So she isn't that?" I'm like dude, I just said she was a Husky.
I personally love my PetSmart. There are two ladies there that seem to take turns on which days to work the register and they are great! They recognize and know Phoenix from the countless times I have taken her in to get her weighed. They will even recognize me when I don't have her. They also know I have rabbits since I have brought them in to be weighed before, so they will ask how my bunnies are and stuff. They also listen to me when I say Phoenix is not allowed to jump. However, there is one trainer there that I have seen only once that I did not like at all though. She had her dog with her when we met and she was talking to me about Phoenix's training. I was explaining that I trained her myself and we are still working on some things. The trainer kept trying to tell me I should bring her in for classes. -_- I kept saying no thanks and trying to leave but she was following me. The worst part was that her dog kept growling at Phoenix and the lady wasn't doing anything about it or keeping him away from her or anything. So while I'm trying to walk away & Phoenix is trying to say hello to him & it was just a mess. Then the "trainer" decides to show off her dog's tricks to me & brag, as if that was going to make me want to join her class... The funny part was that at first she commented on how well trained/behaved Phoenix was, then when she found out I trained her myself, suddenly Phoe needed "further" training. I seriously dislike most trainers. She'll be standing calmly on leash next to me & they'll be asking me what trainer I used. I'll say I trained her myself & they suddenly find faults & issues they could "help" me with. Or they'll ask me if I've ever considered "furthering" her training.
But I get not liking pet stores due to the people. I don't like the PetCo by me, but I don't mind the one a half hour away by my friend's. The people can just be so rude at both. I always feel like they are looking down on my dogs & me. The people at my Pet Supplies Plus & at the one by my friend's always get Phoenix to jump onto the counter for a treat. I'll clearly explain multiple times that she is not allowed to jump on people or counters. They will keep doing it though. At some other pet stores I go to pretty often, they do it as well. Drives me crazy!!
