| My husky puppy bits everything she sees especially when I'm not round. She also like to jump on me whenever I sit to couch. I tried to stop her by saying no and uh uh She listens time to times but she then pretends biting something else get near me then bite me instead again. I tried to hold her under me and tell her no biting as alpha position ( learned it from my trainer friend ) she calms for couple mins then everything start over again.. What should I do !??? |

| First off, stop alpha rolling her. She is just a puppy who is mouthy because she is teething and she hasn't been taught that biting things isn't okay. You are accomplishing nothing by alpha rolling her except putting a wedge in your relationship. You aren't showing her what she is doing wrong, you're just pinning her. She will not trust you if that is how you plan to handle every puppy shinanigan she pulls.
You need to show her what she is allowed to teeth on. Does she have toys?? When she starts to get mouthy with you, give her a verbal correction then GIVE HER A TOY AND PRIASE HER. You will find this method will go a lot faster then pinning her. You need to teach her that toys are for chewing, not body parts.
Is she crated when you aren't home?? If she isn't, then of course she is going to destroy things when you aren't home. Either out her in a puppy proofed room, or buy her a crate. You can't expect her to know that destroying stuff is a bad thing when she hasn't been taugh otherwise.
By saying "no" and not following through with its meaning, she isn't going to reaping to "no" until you show her no means no now. Right now, it's just an empty word she doesn't need to listen to. You need to show her you are the boss, but not by alpha rolling her. That does virtually nothing. You are not a dog; therefore a human rolling a puppy doesn't have the same meaning another dog rolling a puppy would have.
Look into Nothing In Life is Free training. She sounds like she needs boundaries and rules. |

| My puppy is almost 12 weeks now and is also very mouthy. He bites everything he can if I let him. Here are some things I do with him, that seem to be working: 1. I say ah ah. When he stops what he's doing, he gets praise and a treat. I believe that you have to teach them what no means, before you can expect them to respond to it. He is getting better and better with this. 2. Take him outside for some exercise. Sometimes he starts biting my arms when he has to go out to potty and I don't catch on to his other signals. It also helps redirect some energy. I do short little sprints with Dizzy, very short sprints, 10-15 feet, and get him to play chase with me. At first I thought this would make the biting worse, but it just helps him to let him release some energy. 3. Give him something to think about. When he gets bored, he starts wandering around chewing on random stuff, especially furniture. So, I do some little training exercises with him, working on basic commands, and try to teach him something new. He even sometimes bites while he's thinking (insert jeopardy theme music here), but I'll say 'off' and the second he releases, he gets a treat. This also includes puzzle toys, or stuffed kongs, or anything to chew on that they like. Dizzy has an antler that I'll wave under his nose that he loves. I also sometimes hide his chew toys and let him sniff them out. 4. Time outs. Sometimes, he just gets too overstimulated and hyped up and bites anything that moves. This happens a lot when he gets tired. So I put him in his crate with a bully stick or something to squeak and leave him alone for 10-15 minutes. It's not a punishment, but acts as sort of alone time for him to come down from that over activated state. 5. Laser pen - got this for my cats, but Dizzy seriously loves it! I used it this morning to help him release some energy before I left for work, and its helps with releasing some of his prey drive. It definitely did the trick. He whined for about 2 minutes after I left and then passed out. 6. Crate training, puppy proofing and bitter apple. He is crated when I'm gone, and the place is pretty much puppy proofed. I put bitter apple on the stuff he tries to go back to over and over again, like our table, and its a pretty good deterrent. I also have a little play pen for him, that he stays in if I need to do something and can't keep an eye on him. I think overall it sounds like your puppy needs more ways to release energy and more chew toys she really likes. You have to be creative and find ways to help her get rid of that energy. I also disagree with pinning her down, in a weak moment I tried it once with Dizzy and it just escalated his behavior and hyper state. I felt terrible too, I mean who feels like they need to intimidate a 10 week old puppy? I actually was so disappointed in myself I cried... Anyway, moving on... Oh well, I won't try it again and with the strategies above he seems to be improving a lot. These are puppy behaviors, so you need to teach him how to behave in the same way you would a child. You wouldn't pin a 3 year old against the wall and say 'I'm in charge and don't you forget it.' You stay patient and teach them the right way and the wrong way, of course you lose your cool every once in a while, nobody is perfect. Not saying you're getting mad at her, it's just generally how I view the alpha roll thing. I hope this helps! |

| Even just assuming that the theory behind alpha rolls is true and legitimate for a minute, there has to be a whole array of things behind the act itself, such as confidence and calm assertiveness and all of the other non-verbal, energy/body language aspects of the act. It's not just the one maneuver isolated by itself. If you don't have the underlying pieces in place, then it is just a frustrated person annoying a frustrated puppy.
It seems pretty apparent that you're frustrated and lacking confidence, which is fine and perfectly understandable, but this is not the mindset to be coming from if you're to be seen as alpha of your puppy, much less to be performing alpha rolls. Anger and frustration have nothing to do with dominance or being alpha.
For the record, I don't perform alpha rolls and don't personally subscribe to the specific theory behind it, but I have studied it thoroughly and understand it very well.
The constructive advice has been great so far and hopefully you can change the course of you and your puppy's interaction. It definitely sounds like your pup needs rules and boundaries more firmly and and needs to be shown what "yes" is, not just "no". "No" without "yes" is going to be a very difficult way to teach your pup what you expect from him.
Good luck! |
