Puppy Feeding Empty
PostSubject: Puppy Feeding   Puppy Feeding EmptySat Jun 15, 2013 12:01 pm

Max is currently 11 weeks old, & I feed him Fromm Gold large breed puppy food. I've been following the suggestions for feeding on the back of the bag, and it says up to 1 & 1/2 cups a day. That doesn't seem like a lot! (Keep in mind, this is my first husky so maybe that's normal, but he always seems hungry!)
I feed him half a cup for breakfast, and half a cup when I come home from work. The morning routine seems fine, but once I get home from work I either take him on a mile or two walk or we play rigorously for about an hour. A little after exercise time, I'll feed him dinner. He devours it. Gone in 60 seconds. Should I up his feeding a little, or is this normal? I don't want to starve the poor guy, but I don't want to over feed him either pale

Thats a lot of exercise for 11 weeks old. The general rule of thumb is 5 min for every month old. So his walks should be no longer than 10-15 minutes. That could be why he is requiring more food. If you can see his ribs then you are definitely not feeding enough. If you can't see his ribs, but you can feel them then her should be just fine.

I second that you're walking him too far, but you may well be underfeeding him as well.  Shadow was eating one cup of Nature's Variety Instinct 3 times per day when we got her at 12 weeks, and we've since upped it to a cup and a quarter.  She's huge for her age though, so depending on Max's build and the food it's probably somewhere in between what you're feeding and what I'm feeding.  I would say at the very least add in another feeding during the day, and see how he does.  As Erica said, you should easily feel ribs but not be able to see them.  Also watch how fast he eats, eating too fast can actually be dangerous.  You can try spreading his kibble out on a cookie sheet or putting a heavy ball in the dish to get him to slow down a bit.

Thanks for the advice guys! I tried to get a picture showing his general build. I can't see his ribs though, so I think we're okay there. But we're gonna cut down his exercise a bit. And if you don't mind me asking, why is eating too fast dangerous- is it just a choking hazard? I don't want my bug getting hurt EmbarassedPuppy Feeding 61811

Yes I believe its a choking hazard because he's not actually chewing his food he's just inhaling it. I would add in one more feeding a day (I fed Karli three times a day until she was 6 months old.) At that age I was feeding her around 2 1/2 cups of food a day. If you want to tire him out, mental stimulation works well too. Work on training for 5-10 minutes and you'll have a sleepy puppy, almost as if you had gone on a ten minute walk!!!

I concur with the too much exercise for one- second is he UTD on his worming schedule?  Third, ALWAYS soak puppy's food for 20-30 min prior to feeding to ensure the kibble is soft.  Hard kernel aspiration is the leading killer of puppies between the ages of 6wks and 6mos-
