Puppy has Giardia? Empty
PostSubject: Puppy has Giardia?   Puppy has Giardia? EmptySat May 11, 2013 8:45 am

Hi, I'm new to the forum and just a few weeks ago, a week after I adopted my first Husky pup, we found out he had Giardia [A parasite that infects the intestines of it's host], we got treatment and is there any other way we can prevent him from picking it up somewhere around the house where there might be the virus lingering? We've spoken to our vet and the next time we'll see them unless it gets really serious is in the next month. Just curious if there's anyone who has gone through this nightmare as well. My father and I are infected by it too now. -_- Such is life.

Make sure you are cleaning with bleach solution (10% bleach to water) the areas there have been messes. Giardia lives in the fecal matter when it's passed from a live host. Cleaning must include the yard! Washing pet beds. Everything- The way giardia is passed beyond in feces is in stagnant water- so be sure you don't leave old standing water around, if there is be sure your pup isn't playing in or drinking such water.

Here's the unfortunate part for all- once you have been infected, you are always a carrier of the dormant virus. So if you are ever exposed again it is almost instant reinfection. And that my friend is no fun at all. I have been sick with Giardia as a child, from playing in a mountain creek, and exposed twice while in rescue....it's not something I ever want to get again.

Thank you very much for the information, our vet only told us to wash our hands after playing with him so I had to look up how we could get the virus, etc. I've heard about the bleach solution washing only once before. The last part about being the carrier is really kind of scary, I don't ever want to have this again. :/

Anyway, thank you, again.
