| Hey Guys, Im desperate for some help here.
Dakota has had a sensitive stomach since a pup, so long story short, she had had allergy testing done and only poultry she is not allergic to is Lamb and Chicken, I found a great food that she loves, lamb based (Zignature brand), and she was doing great eating 3 cups a day (she is almost 1 yr old, her Bday is Dec 15th !! yay). She's been on this food for approx 4 months now.
Approx 2 weeks ago she got an anal glad infection and was placed on antibiotics, she was eating well, not like her normal self, but doing good. She got off her antibiotics and seemed to be doing good.
Then on Dec 3-4th, she started to not want to eat her food, she would even turn down some treats. Since then she will take treats sometimes, and I got her to eat food out of my hand yesterday, but today she will not eat. The thing that is confusing is she will eat chicken if I cook it for her, so she is hungry and will eat just not her dog food. She is drinking water and having normal poops. Acting normal and playful.
AT first I was concerned about a blockage b/c she destroyed a stuffed toy she was given by her grandmother and I though maybe she ate some of it ... but that was on Dec 2nd and she has been going to the bathroom ok so I dont think its a blockage.
So this is poor timing for her to be acting this way b/c I am going out of town this week and she will be boarded while I am gone (I can not reschedule this trip its for work), so my question is; should I make chicken for her and get the staff there just give her chicken b/c I know she will eat it, and then figure out if why she doesn't want to eat her food when I get back??? And if I do that, how much should she get per meal?? Ive never feed her chicken on a regular basis.
Any suggestions would be great. Thanks |

| If she wont eat her normal food but will still take treats/cooked chicken and is acting normally; then the odds are she's just being a picky teenager. (ask me how I know this ) What I would do is try to give her the normal food, if she refuses to eat it then pick it up and give it to her again at your next feeding time. Also don't give her any treats or other kinds of food between feeding times if she doesn't eat, because if she's simply holding out for the yummy stuff then it will just reinforce her behavior. They're smart and wont let themselves starve, so eventually she'll just eat her normal food when she's hungry enough. I don't really have any advice on the whole boarding situation though. Other members are much more knowledgeable on these subjects so hopefully they'll jump in and help out. Good luck, and also happy early birthday to Dakota!

| Thanks, I actually just got home from being out for a bit and as soon as she got out of her kennel, she went and ate all her food in her dish, so she must have been hungry and figured there was no chicken lol. I think what I plan on doing with her boarding is bring her normal food as well as cooked chicken and tell them to give her chicken for dinner; ONLY if she doesnt eat her breakfast and lunch, so we will see how that works, at least I will know she is eating.
Hopefully it will go smoothy and she will be ok.

| I wouldn't worry if she goes off her food while being boarded, it could just be the stress of being away from you. I worked at a boarding kennel when I was in college and it was pretty common for dogs not to eat for the first couple days. We only got concerned if the dog had another health problem, or if it went on longer than 3 days. I really like the zignature brand. I feed my pup raw, but considered that brand when I had him on kibble and would probably have put it in the rotation for him. For your pup, I would look into some other brands and flavors that she is not allergic to and switch it up every now and then. Some dogs eat the same things their whole lives without a problem, but some like variety. If she gets tired of lamb, try chicken for a bit. What proteins was she allergy tested for? You could try some less common ones like duck, venison, or bison based foods. She might be able to handle more as she gets older as well. For the first 6-7 months of my pups life he couldn't handle much outside of his food (everything, seriously everything gave him diarrhea) but as he's matured, he has been able to deal with a lot more. |
