| Everything I have read says that you shouldn't let your puppy sleep too much in the evening if you want to sleep through the night. When we try and play with him, he plays for a min then goes over to a pillow and curls up again. I wouldn't mind it so much but he is awake a few hours before we want to get up so his schedule needs adjusting. How? Will restarting the scheduled potty breaks at night break him of the whining to get out in the second half of the night (see below)?
Background: Meeko is 3 month old male husky that my wife and I have been working with for about a month. We feed him 2x a day on a schedule (4:45am and 500pm) and take him out every 2 hours and right after he gets up from a nap. We are still struggling with housebreaking but the real problem is his sleep schedule. I read that puppies will sleep anywhere between 16-20 hours a day. When we go to bed around 10pm we let him out and he lasts about 4 hours before needing to go out. After that, he whines every 45 min to an hour. We let him out and he goes back to sleep. Around 4:10 he goes ballistic and won't quiet down. We don't let him out until the alarm goes off but we aren't sleeping much anymore. We used to get him up a few times a night to go out but stopped it to see how often he actually needed. That was working fine up until last week when he learned that whining gets him out of the cage (re-learned that reading a post. Sleep deprived brains don't pick up things easily). |

| It sounds like you are doing everything pretty well, I would just stick with it and get yourself some earplugs, so you can sleep through some of it. I'd say, let him out at 10, wake him up at 1 or 2 to let him go and then make him wait until your normal wake up time, it helps if you are waking him up to go out, not waiting until he wakes you up. At that age, my pup could usually make it through the night, or at least around 6-7 hours. He did, and still does wake up in the middle of the night, but as long as I leave something for him to chew on he'll just entertain himself, but it took a little while of ignoring his whining/crying/screaming for him to decide to chew his bone instead of insisting I get up.
Another thing that really helped Dizzy was covering his crate, and setting up a fan for him. When I was crate training, it was the summer, and I think part of his issue was that he was getting hot. So, I would point a small fan toward the crate and drape a towel over it. I know the fan/cover trick has helped other people too. |

| We have a crate in our room for bed time at night and another one in the family room for when we leave for work. The 2nd night we had him he went crazy not being able to see us. He's been sleeping in our room ever since. Would having us out of sight help or hurt things? I know he cranks up the whining when he can see us moving in bed. |

| We have been able to get a bit more sleep with dictating the schedule again. We also alternate who gets up on the weekends so one of us is rested that day. The thing that has been bothering us this last week is his sleep schedule again. In the evening, he is either jumping around like a madman or sleeping. No in between. If he is sleepy he'll snap at us or play a bit then walk over to the other side of the room and lie down again. Now that we adjusted our bedtime to 9 he has adjusted his to 730. He'll wake up around 3-4 in the morning and whine. This morning it was constant and non stop from 330 till 5 with no quitting. How can I keep him active longer in the evening so he sleeps when we sleep? |

| Why don't you try taking him to a dog park in the late evening? Just let him play until you see that he is loosing interest (Don't want to exercise too much). Then take him out before sleep just to potty and you should be ok. My pup (4 months old) makes it through the night, or even more, since he goes to bed like 1 or 2 hours before me, as long as he is tired, and we have never made potty breaks in the night. I have little experience but night hasn't been a problem since he started going out, so it may work for you too! By the way, I suggest the dog park because I find it to be the best way to tire mine out, since he is too young to run or walk for very long periods. |

| The vet says to avoid socialization until second round of shots so no dog parks (although there shouldn't be any other dogs later at night). I have a large fenced in back yard that we let him run around in when we aren't pressed for time. We also take him on walks in the 6-8 pm time frame. I know he can hold it for longer periods than we give him but he doesn't want to sleep without playing after a while. This morning he ate a bit, played a bit and they was pretty calm and napping while I stayed up with him so my wife could sleep. 1.5 hours of whining for food he wasn't really interested in and 15 min of play. |

| The problem I see is that it is really difficult (At least for me) to tire the pup out properly without letting him play with other dogs at some point in the day. This is because when he is playing in the park he can run and jump and whatever and I know his joints will be ok this way. When he is walking with me I can just walk. In your case he will play in the yard but it won't come close to playing with other dogs. You could start training him too, it will tire him for sure, both mentally and physically. How many vaccines has he had? Maybe someone can give you more info on this, but my pup was fully vaccinated at 3 months with 3 rounds. The vet gave him 1 more shot later but he has been with other dogs since around that age. If it is not possible to go to the dog park yet and you know someone with a pup or a dog who is healthy 100% sure you could invite them to visit so that the dogs could play in the yard. Anyway, don't worry because you will see a HUGE difference as soon as he starts playing with other dogs, as many people say around here, tired dog=happy dog and happy owner haha |

| Finally was able to see the truth on the tired puppy bit. Brought Meeko over to my parent's for NYE and he ran around with my brother's dog for 5 hours. Tired puppy didn't want to get up to play until the next evening. Thanks for the help. |

| We have been slowly moving back his night time pee break and think that we might be able to get a full night's sleep soon. Right now we are getting him up at 3:15 (sometimes he gets up a few min before the alarm goes off) and gets back in bed. We get him up at 4:45 for breakfast while we get ready for work. This last week he has decided that 4:15 is the appropriate time to get up, howl and scratch at the door of his crate. We let him sit until the alarm 30 min later. He has been going to daycare 3x a week and is much calmer in general. We were hoping that he would sleep through the night without the early wake ups. Anything we can do to not have him up 30 min before we want to wake up? |
