| my 12 week old puppy is very gentel with other dogs but is terrifed when they bark or are bigger then her.. little dogs she will be excited for and wag her tail and calmly walk up to them and let them sniff her but big dogs she whimmers , tail between her legs and then hides behind me or my fiance (Very Cute but shouldnt happen) I currently rub her and tell her its okay and pet the other dog and then try to show her its good but she just freezes. I always take her out and try again but no luck.. |

| I've got a 10 week old that I brought home on Saturday. There are a lot of new things in the city that scare him. The most recent thing was trash bags. Here on garbage night the bags go out on the sidewalk. He stood back and looked at them, and barked, and hid, and refused to walk by. So, I stood there for a few minutes and he stretched his nose out to check one out. As he did I praised him. He felt a bit better but still wouldn't walk by so I crouched down next to the bag, and lured him over with a treat and praise, and he sniffed it. Eventually I got him to the point where I could rustle and move the bag around and he was fine.
I think the key to puppy fears is desensitization. As far as comforting her, that reinforces her fear. I would take her to an area where there are large dogs passing by and just let her watch them, not approach and meet, keep yourself calm and don't cuddle and baby talk to her. Just let her watch and figure it out herself. I've noticed with my little guy that if something scares him a bit, he'll stop walking and zero in on it or come close to me, or behind me. I just watch him, and wait patiently eventually he'll take a couple steps forward with his nose sticking out, and if the thing isn't too scary he investigate further, and eventually move on. It's time consuming, but seems to work pretty well with him. If I try to pull him towards something he backs up like mule and gets more frightened. Eventually her natural puppy curiosity will overcome her fear and she'll want to meet them. Also I wouldn't force her into any interaction if she is that fearful that will just intensify the fear. |

| so when Iam walking her to the beach or ont he street and she just stops and sits and trys to pull back is that also her fear? or just the stubberness of a husky i dont want to make her more fearful if thats what iam doing but if its just her trying to be the top lady then telling her to come in a lower tone is what seems to work |

| It's kinda hard to gauge without seeing it, but it took me a day or two to figure it out with him. At first, I thought he was just giving me attitude by pulling back and talking, because he wasn't really acting scared, it just seemed sassy and bratty. The only reason I realized it was fear is because he started doing it as a stroller was approaching him and he'd tried to avoid one before. So now, with everything I just stand to the side of the sidewalk and let him watch it either go by, or watch it until it doesn't bother him any more. Or if something really bugs him, then I give him treats to work on desensitization. For your girl, I would watch her closely to see if you can figure out weather it's fear or stubbornness. See if you can identify a trigger that might be causing the backing up. Basically, when I'm walking him, I'm almost entirely focused on watching him, hardly even look where I'm going lol. It doesn't make for the most fun walk, but it does help me pick up on things like that. |

| Yes... They are amazing. I've only had him for a few days and he's mostly potty trained. He does the backup thing if he forgets to pee on the walk and still has to go when I try to bring him in. He's so easily distracted that I'll know he has to go, but he's too busy checking everything out. |

| I only have the puppy. The other one is the family dog, and she lives in Colorado with my parents. She loves puppies though, she would love him. She's 15 going on 16, and still very healthy, she's lost her hearing, but she's healthy otherwise. |

| You'd be surprised how common that is. Young pups do scare easy, depending on the situation.
Like Jen mentioned, one thing you should stop doing is comforting her when she hides. Don't let her hide behind you. If she tries, then you need to move away. Don't pet her and try to comfort her with words, either.
Anything along those lines only reinforce that behavior. When she's scared and hides behind you, the last thing you want to do is make her think it's a good thing. |
