| My dog always wakes up at 5:30 or 6 and refuses to go back to bed. Ill take him for a walk and then try to get him to go back to sleep after and he just screams his head off. I have people in the house all the time for the most part and dont want them to get waken up so I always just wake up with him but its costing me alot of sleep. Any advice to get him to sleep in later and do any of your puppies sleep in? |

| Nope.
Mishka to this day still wakes me up between 5:45-6:15am every weekend morning. I'm up at 5:30 during the week so he's used to getting let out at 6:15-6:20. I have tried staying up late, exercising, mental stimulation (all done late in the evening) and he still wakes up early.
Most of the time I will get up to let him out, feed him, and let him stay out for a little while before I pick him up again. He'll usually let me sleep for another 45-90 minutes before he's crying again.
I know some member's dogs will let them sleep until like 11 on weekends.

| He is still young. What time is his last meal at night? Our 2 Get us at 6am every weekend, we can let them out and sleep till 7. _________________ |

| If he learns that screaming means I get to go play, then he'll keep screaming when he wants out no matter what you do.
I get that you have other people in the house and don't want to disturb them, but this is going to take some time and patience from everyone. If he's been outside to so his business and is fed, then he should learn to be quiet in the mornings.
Edit: Is he crated over night or what? |

| I also forgot to add, I never actually go let Mishka out while he's crying (he just whines) but I always wait for him to calm down before I let him out. Like Katie said, if you let him out while he's throwing a fit and screaming then he's going to learn that he gets let out to play when he does it.
It definitely does get better, but it's something that they have to learn. _________________ |

| Koda used to be like this aswell. He is a angel now for me. I usually put him to bed between 9:30 and 10 and then i wake up at 6:00 and let him out at about 6:30 after im done getting ready. You just have to let them cry through for a little while. I usually leave a toy or a safe chew in his kennel for when he is bored. Sometimes i wake up in th middle of the night hearing him chomp away but he is being pretty quiet then he falls back asleep. Never whines at all. Sometimes he will wake up and have to go outside once in the middle of the night but he is still young so i will let him out and put him back. When he was younger and id let him out and put him back he would scream. But he figured out after a while when i ignored him and didnt pay attention to him that it was still sleeping time. Just ignore them and dont say anythkng to them when they are crying. Dont even say be quiet or yell at them or anything just ignore. Good luck! It will get better |

| Kenzi is no puppy but she gets up at 3:30am nearly every morning. We chuck her in the backyard and that's where she stays until we are ready to get up, unless it's raining out then we let her out to pee then when she comes back in we just leave her out in the living room with her toys to chew or sleep however she wants to. This routine only changes if she's been going non-stop all day or it's storming. I know a lot here crate and trusting your dog to not destroy the house when left to free roam is easier said than done with most, but this has worked best for us. I assume the crate is in your bedroom. If you leave him loose in your room while you try to go back to sleep will he freak out? Maybe give him a soft non-squeaky toy to chew so him working won't keep you awake. _________________ |

| I know seriously. It would be great if he slept until 11. A dream come true lol. Hes last meal is around 4-5 p.m. Yeah your right Katie I do need to teach him. Yes he sleeps in a crate overnight because Im trying to get him ust to it for when I cant be here to watch him. I usually wait for him to stop crying to be let out. How long should he be quiet for though? Thank Eric I'm hoping he get more and more ust to my routine. Benny if left in my room will either scratch at the door to be let out or bite attack me Jenn lol. I wish a toy would pacify him. He feels like hes missing out if hes not downstairs where he believes all the action is going on but Im actually happy right now because we have had some progress. I put him in his crate around nine and let him scream for a little while , while i tried to fall asleep and he fell asleep and was quiet! He still is being quiet in there right now as we speak. |

| rikku is up every day at 5, for a while it was 330am (thank god she got past that)... what i do is let her out, take her potty, say hi for a min, then put her back in the kennel and get her breakfast ready. it took her a few days to understand it. but usually buys another hour, sometimes more depending if the she gets to a food coma lol... |

| Nanook is up at about 445 every morning but then again that's cause my wife and I get up that early to work out. Weekends we usually get up around 7 cause he want's to be fed and is used to getting it at 6. Not sure if he ever had a "puppy time" given we've always been getting up early anyways, but the advice about not letting your pup out while they are whining is good advice. Nanook's gotten really good and we've actually started letting him just sleep in the bed we got him in our bedroom. He'll get up and nudge me if he needs to go out (and I'm a light sleeper so I usually wake up if I notice him get out of his bed). The only other thing I can say is once you get a schedule going they learn from it and mold to it so if you get up at 6 regularly during the week don't expect to sleep in much longer than that on the weekends/holidays/days off etc. |

| Yeah I just need to get him accustomed to the schedule that Im on I suppose. Haha 3:30 would be a tough one if he kept at that time schedule. Awee Rikku is a day younger than Benny. He needs a little playmate I wish there was some husky pups in my area he could get playdates with. Thats a good idea. I should fed him in his crate in the morning for now on. Thats great that Nanook can sleep on his bed at night without destroying anything. I work at night and my earliest class when i start up classes is at ten so I want to urge him to sleep a little later than 6 but Im happy that hes sleeping through the night now without having to go out to use the restroom |

| Ya it took Nanook a couple of months before he'd sleep the whole night through. Once they do though they get better at being able to "sleep in". Sleeping the whole night though was a major improvement though and was a blessing in-and-of itself lol |

| Yeah I'm just happy that hes doing that. Waking up at three and then again at six was horrible. Nanook is gorgeous. |

| ya the feeding in the morning did me wonders on the weekend, during the week im up at 5 any ways so it doesnt bother me but god forbid if im getting up that early on the weekends lol... i do however fall in to the zone of letting her out when she cries but only if its at night and its a cry because she has to go potty, so its a strict out side and strict back in no horse play...
and ha thats pretty cool i didnt even notice they were a day apart!
as for playdates, when she is ready on shots, im sure there may be people on here over in that area, i know there is a couple people in michigan i have found and talked to and when rikku is ready i will be setting something up with... i mean whats a couple hour drive for a days fun for the pup and you |

| Haha yeah the weekends are your day to sleep in and take it easy after waking up that early all week. Thats true. I lived in Michigan for four months before i moved here. I loved it there. So beautiful. Hopefully Benny will meet some puppies the more we go places and explore. |

| Dizzy has me pretty well trained to get up early now. I have to be at work by 7:30 so I usually get up around 5:00-5:30 so I can get him some decent exercise in the morning, if I don't, I regret it later in the day. Before him, I was NEVER a morning person. Thankfully though, he only cries if he has to go potty. On weekday mornings, I actually have to wake him up, and he is SO slow to get up, he has to stretch like 5 times and just pops one eye open to see if I'm actually serious about him waking up. On weekend mornings when I wake up, he is already awake, but quiet. Once we go out for our morning walk, I feed him and put him back into his crate for that so I can get ready for work without a puppy jumping in the shower with me. So, he's pretty good about being quiet in his crate unless he needs to go. If he makes noise after that, I just give him something to do, like a bully stick and he quiets right down. I'm lucky that way I guess, but after his morning walk I'm usually too awake to go back to bed anyway, so I just stay up. I do nap in the afternoon on the weekends though. When he was in that 9-12 week age range, I just did as Jesse described, quick potty break outside with no play/interaction and back in the crate. I used earplugs and ignored him as long as I knew he didn't have to go to the bathroom. As much as it sucks now, ignoring her when she cries will pay off in the long run. Just think about it like the borg... Resistance is futile, ignore her resistance and she'll become assimilated to your sleeping in lol (sorry nerd reference) . Another note though, is that I do leave water for him overnight and a nylabone or extra large bully stick, so if he gets bored, he can entertain himself. I didn't always leave water, but once I knew he wouldn't drink it all and have an accident I trusted him, sometimes he does spill it all over, but I think he does it for fun or something. Finally, I'd suggest a crate cover (I used a towel) and maybe a fan, its worked for some others and was the key to getting Dizzy to be quiet in the morning after I left for work. I don't need the cover anymore, but still use the fan. I was so sleep deprived the first few weeks though. It was pretty rough. It will get better though. |

| For the first month, Loki woke up at like 3, then 5-6. Then, the next month he only woke up between 5-6. This past weekend, he woke up at 5:30AM or so. I took him outside both days and then said please let me go back to sleep and put him in his crate. I tried this before, but it didn't work. He wimpered for a little the first day and on the second there was no peep from him. He let me sleep until 8-9AM both days (another 2+ hours for me). I hope he keeps it up.
The only change is his daily walks went from morning to night except on weekends when he gets both. Not sure if this had something to do with it or not. Though in comparison to what others say, I think he is much lower energy altogether too. When we did 2 walks every day, he barely acted like a puppy. |

| The fan and cover are a good idea. I usually put towels over the crate but he'll pull them in the crate with himself. Benny would probably like the fan considering he always lays ontop of the AC vents. Thats funny you have to wake him up though. Bennys always the one waking me up. Haha no its okay i like the nerd reference. He has helped me be more productive by getting me up early though. I ust to wake up way to late and he kind of makes it so I have to get out of bed which is a positive even though I miss the sleep. Hahah Benny freaks out when I shower. I tried putting him in there with a bone and kong and he just would scratch on the door and then hed try pulling down the shower curtains by jumping up on them and crying. |

| Yeah thats what I did today with Benny. Put him back in his crate after a little while of him being outside and playing and he cried for five minutes and then let me sleep. I was so happy. I try to walk him as often as possible or else he'll turn into a mad man but recently hes very resistant to going on walks. |
