Hello all, This might be a stupid question, but our puppy seems to be panting at night almost every night. He just recently started doing this. He drinks plenty of water and we turn the heat off during the night so it's cool for him while he sleeps. Sometimes we even keep the window open and let him sleep near it. Of course, I know dogs pant to cool themselves off, but is this something we should be concerned about? I think I am overly paranoid with anything that has to do with the puppy since we had trouble with him from the day we got him . I just need some clarification! Sorry if this is a silly question. Thanks! Liesse

Nonsense, that is what we are here for is silly questions. My pup Onyx used to do this all the time. We learned it was his way of fighting yawning and going to sleep. He would pant for minutes on end, yawn, then quit, start back up a few minutes later, yawn again, then finally lay down. We figured as a typical child this is him fighting sleeping. I wouldn't worry too much.

Panting can be from stress too - so don't think too much. Heck, my dogs pant if they have had a really intense dream.

When Loki pants at night it is his signal to me that he has to pee.

Our last husky used to pant all the time. (especially at night) I agree with the panting for cooling but with him it was mostly a panting when tired /exhausted becasue then he would usually reverse hiccup. lI think it was him trying to kep him self awake and excited. Bourbon pants everynight whe he is inside wether he isactively looking to cool down or not so I tend to belive it is the nightly process for some dogs. I would not worry.

Mila just started panting at night and it's driving me crazy because she sleeps in her crate next to the bed and it keeps me awake. She eventually stops and goes to sleep but not before she has to smack for 5 minutes, which of course is lovely because that sound is like nails on a chalk board to me. But I wouldn't worry about it.

I wonder if this and the not eating are related maybe? Maybe not, I'm a holistic nut so my first instinct is to think everything is related. Has it been warmer or more humid, she may just be adjusting to that? Are her gums pale? I know you have a vet visit scheduled for her eating issues, I would recommend bringing up the panting issue as well, especially since its a new problem. What about water intake? Any change there? Btw, I'm not in the medical field, so don't get all worried from my questions, just maybe looking at it from a different angle and giving you ideas to discuss with your vet. It sounds like she has been quite a challenge and I hope you can work out these issues soon, for her health, and for your own sanity. EDIT - I'm sorry, when I replied, I didn't notice the op was not posted by the person I thought! I didn't mean to highjack! I have heard puppies pant a lot and generally its nothing to worry about! Your puppy is adorable!
