In Heat???? Empty
PostSubject: In Heat????   In Heat???? EmptyTue Mar 26, 2013 5:55 pm

Hey Guys and dolls,

So... I have a male husky, Optimus, who is about 16 months old and we recently adopted a puppy from a pound, Rogue. However, because Rogue is from a pound, we dont know her exact age. The vet thought about 8 weeks (end of january).

Now here's the issue; Rogue has been licking herself a lot lately and Optimus is showing more interest in her behind, has even began to try mount her once or twice. Rogue is quick to tell him off but Im worried that she may be in heat. Shocked I dont want her getting pregnant this young. We plan to spay her and also him but his appointment isnt until next month (before she hit 6 months..... or so we thought!).... another 2 weeks away!

We are going to the vet tomorrow to get her chipped (now adding being checked over), but it is not until 7pm, and we have seperated them to be safe but im curious to know if she might be hitting heat early. I have only ever dealt with male dogs and never had a male and female together...

Anyone any ideas??

Thanks in advance

Are her girlie parts swollen? That's a tell tale sign. Shortly after it swells, the bleeding will come. Also, a female in heat *usually* won't allow a male to mount her (unless it's just playing around) until she is in the fertile part, which is about when the bleeding slows down or stops.

Chekced her yesterday and didnt really notice swelling but because i am only going by research pics i can find, i dont trust my judgements...yet!
I read that they wont let males mount until they are ina certain stage of the cycle..... he can keep his bits to himself as far as i am concerned!!!!

I am definitely keeping them apart until vet says she is in the clear!

you can also try to put a diaper on her just in-case.... its odd the pound let her go so young and not spayed.... is the spay covered in your adoption?

The pounds here are like a last chance for animals, they are not like charities or organisations (dspca, paws, blue cross etc). The animals are given a limited time period then put to sleep!
The pound take no responsibilities for the dogs they release. I was initially looking for an adult dog, husky, but the dog really don't take to my partner.
I assumed they would have to assess us ( like an organisation would) to see if we were eligible or suitable to adopt a dog. Instead I paid a fee and was handed a dog the same day!!!!! They "suggest" spaying and even give u a voucher.... Considerate!!!!!!

It was our responsibility from then on. We brought her to vet before introducing her to Optimus........ As it turned out, rogue was very underweight and have a case of mange!!! So she had to be quarantined!

Long story short.... Once u take the dog from the pound, they are your responsibility!

I may try the diaper tonight! Admittedly it does sound odd but I can see the practicalities of it!

Thanks so much!

I'm not sure how well you can see it, but when Sheba went into heat I put on little boys briefs with a ladies pad in them on her. You put the tail through the little pee pee hole. Whenever she was in her crate, I took the undies off so she could clean herself. They will keep the area very, very clean and they need to opportunity to as well. Once I realized Sheba wasn't dripping at all, or maybe just two or three drops, I took the undies off. She had them on for maybe three days.

If your male isn't fixed, then not only put the undies on her but never leave them alone together, regardless if she has undies on or not. Males are very determined, and undies may or may not stop them.

Also be very careful when taking her outside to go to the bathroom and on walks. I kept two leashes on Sheba at all times. One regular length and a 10ft leash. The 10ft leash was around my waist and I handled the regular one..well like normal lol!

Just remember they are not done when the bleeding stops. I kept Sheba under lock down for about a month and a half, just to be safe.
