| Subject: Should I be concerned? Sun Mar 24, 2013 3:19 am | |
| Ok so I made a account to ask a question about the new puppy I had my eye on. This is the first dog that will strictly be my dog, in my new home, seeing as me and my wife just moved to a new town due to military. I found a breeder about 3 hours away, and I called and talked to her and she was telling me a lot about the breed that I had read before, so it was apparent that she knew her stuff. I saw pictures of the parents, and of the pup. She also offers a 1 year health guarantee, and has been breeding for 13 years. Now this was the first purebred dog I had looked for, and I did A LOT of research on the breed, but didn't even think about doing any research on the registration until another friend told me his was AKC registered, and I wanted to see the difference between the AKC registration he had, and the ACA registration mine was coming with. That's when I read nothing but bad things about the ACA. Talking about how the dogs can possibly not be purebred, and that it's normally associated with BYB, and puppy mills. Should I be worried about him possibly not being purebred, and is this a legit reason to be worried. I'm thinking about pulling out of this deal, because of how people said that the ACA is associated with BYB/puppy mills. I haven't picked him up yet, because he isn't 8 weeks yet. I don't plan on showing, or breeding him, I just don't wanna get possibly ripped outta $650. Thank you! Puppy: Mom: Father: |

| This doesn't sound like a breeder who I would personally support. I would urge you to read the stickied threads on how to find a reputable breeder. Perhaps if you shared your location others could assist with recommendations. _________________ Force Free Training ThreadCheyenne, Mishka, Mickey, Rodeo, & Odin Are you a Husky owner in South Florida?! | I agree. I would not support this breeder either. Kudos to you for researching the registration though! I personally have never heard of this registration.. Seems a new one pops up all the time. Definitely check out the sticky. Although some registrations are more reputable then others, just because you have a registered dog does not mean you have a dog that should be bred. You seem like you want to do things right, so never feel like you can ask too many questions; to us or to a breeder. Good luck in your search and keep us posted! |

| Just remember, even if AKC registered, it does not mean the dog will be perfect and not have problems. It only means the breeder has gone thru the process and made sure the family tree has been AKC registered. Even AKC admits that they have no control of the temperament or health of these dogs.
To the OP, if you really wish to adopt an AKC husky, see if the breeder has done DNA testing of the parents. You will spend a lot more than $650 for guaranteed purebred. Research, research, research.
For me, we didn't care if our Husky was AKC, although he is. Our first husky was rescued from the pound.. No papers but she has been a great dog. She has had seizure problems when she was younger but we dealt with it. |

| Thank you for the responses! I really liked the little guy too, and still wouldn't mind getting him, but the only thing is I don't really know if it's worth $650 dollars if he could turn up not even being purebred. It may sound like I'm being stingy, but that's a lot of money to possibly get duped over! I'm located in Abilene, Tx, but have no problem driving to find a pup! |

http://www.texashuskyrescue.org/Info/AboutUs I'm actually looking on their site right now! Am I right for being conscious about spending $650, or is that a fair amount for the puppy I posted. I guess that's my biggest question. |

| I paid $425 for my puppy with no papers. I think I would look around a little more before I got her/him... I agree with the Texas Husky rescue shelter. I would try there. You can also try http://www.k9stud.com/viewallstuds.aspx this is where I found my puppy. I live in Texas as well. There are a ton of breeders. I live in Houston and had to drive to San Antonio to get her. So you may have to make a small drive for some of these breeders. |

| Please start here: http://www.shca.org/shcahp4f.htm#TX
Health testing is very important... As well as structurally sound dogs. "Vet checked" is NOT the same thing. That registry is most certainly a puppy mill/BYB registry. Please do not support these people. _________________ Force Free Training ThreadCheyenne, Mishka, Mickey, Rodeo, & Odin Are you a Husky owner in South Florida?! Join our facebook meetup group! |

| Thank you for the input, I think I will end up holding off. The only thing is I sent her a deposit because I hadn't done my research on the whole registration thing. I was so busy looking up on how to take care of the dog, the more important thing, that I didn't even think about looking up what the ACA stood for. When I found all the bad news about the ACA it kinda broke my heart. Now I'm gonna see if I can get my deposit back, if not, it's just a expensive lesson learned! Either way this is a learning experience for me, and even though I'm out some money, I'll take the positive out of this and make sure that I do my research on EVERYTHING next time, and be more thorough! Thanks again everyone, now to make the call to this lady, and tell her I'm gonna pull out. I hate making those types of phone calls! lol |

| I've applied to the Texas Husky Rescue, to adopt a Husky! The 3 I put in for are around 1 year old, and I'm hoping I end up being able to adopt one! Is it gonna be a little more challenging training a dog at a year old? I'm assuming it won't be to much harder since they're still puppies at that age. |

Congrats and good luck! For future reference, if you do look into breeders, just being AKC registered isn't everything. Usually a breeder who advertises on any kind of online classifieds is in it for the money. There's TONS of threads on here about responsible breeders and what to look for, so browse around. Keep us updated on the rescue situation! |
