PostSubject: When could I start taking my puppy for jogs?   When could I start taking my puppy for jogs? EmptySun Mar 24, 2013 2:52 pm

Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum! Smile

So I have a mix GSD/Husky who is 11 weeks, I've only had him for 3 weeks though.

I'm sort of an experiences owner having owned Chihuahuas, sharpeis, and pitbulls however this one has been the BIGGEST handfull, constantly full of energy, bites everything, and just loves to do whatever he wants.

Going to take him to puppy training classes soon; however for now I'm crate training him, and potty training him. (Not having much success). Anyway;

I wanted to know; could I start taking my puppy out for jogs right now? I understand he's still a pup; but he looks big enough haha and since I'm an active person - thats why I got him. I have taken him out for walks however after 1 mile he tends to just want to lay/sit down on the grass/pavement/trail where ever I walk him. Is this normal since he gets tired; or is he just being lazy?

Thank you again! Sorry if I posted this in the wrong section.

It's a general rule that you don't want to do any forced run/jogging activities until 1 year old to fully allow their joints to develop.

Ahh okay gotcha, however long walks (1 mile) would be okay right?

The rule of thumb for that is 5 minutes for every month old they are. He's around 3 months old, so trying to keep your walks to around 15min right now (especially if it's on a hard, high impact surface like pavement). That doesn't mean you can't take multiple walks a day though!

Also, walking isn't the only way to expend energy. Training sessions are very useful in that. Also, playing/rough housing at home/in the yard, etc...can be as much as he will take! The concern is that walks are more of a "forced" activity and they won't necessarily give up when they're tired. Good luck!

Thank you!! Smile

Yes! I take him out in the backyard couple times a day and let him chase me, or play fetch with a tennis ball (sometimes he brings it back). I do the same inside my house, so I hope its enough play time.

Understood! I will walk him 5min for every month. Sadly I live pretty far from a park so its only pavement unless I drive out to the park. I will limit the walk so he won't hurt his paws and not damage his joints development. Smile Thank you again!

I can't wait until he's older and I could take him for long runs, I'm going to appreciate his puppy stage!
