| And he gets attacked ...We went for our evening walk, same way we always go and this big dog comes running out of his house and tries to get Nanook. I was not fast enough to get between them but he had on his harness I just bought him so I gave him a good yank and picked him up with that awesome handle the harness came with. It lasted all of 30 seconds but scared the piss out of both of us. The dog got a few bites in but did not break any skin that I can tell. The owner was there quickly as well, he felt terrible. Poor Nanook, he was terrified and crying all the way home. I hope this does not scare him away from other dogs, we were taking him to meet my brothers dogs on Easter. CRAP .... now I am nervous to meet other dogs! |

| I'm glad he's not hurt. All I can say is don't be tense with new dogs from now on, nanook will sense that and be tense. I'd introduce him to dogs you know are friendly, and make it as great of an experience as possible. |

| He is giving me an ear full now, I think he found his voice. He has not left my side since we got home and I think he is venting....much like I am doing here lol..My brothers dogs are sweet dogs so I do not anticipate being nervous...but good advice! |

| I agree, just be calm, model the attitude you want, he looks to you when he doesn't know what to do. It's great that you're going to see your brothers dogs, don't let this become a defining experience. I feel bad for the little guy, give him a big hug! |

| Sheba was attacked by an off leash dog around 13 weeks old, and she suffered from on leash aggression. We have been working on it since then, but she still has some issues. This is what I have been doing and I hope it helps you.
After she got attacked, I introduced her to one of my friends' dogs I knew she got along with, just to feel out how she was. She freaked out. She growled, showed her teeth, hackles raised..the whole nine yards. So what I started and I have still been doing since. Desensitizing her to other dogs. Help her realize that all dogs aren't a threat to her. What we do is walk towards the friend's dog and keep her attention on me, all the while stuffing treats into her and being completely chill. If you get nervous or worked up, your pup will pick up on that and associate your feelings with other dogs being a bad thing. As soon as Sheba starts to focus on the other dog negatively, then we turn around and work up until the point she froze and keep working forward until she can walk past the dog without baring her teeth or what not.
You need to make seeing another dog the most AMAZING thing ever! A totally different treat then you have ever used before will make this even better..a jackpot treat. Hopefully your pup doesn't have any fallouts from the incident. It has been a long, tough road with Sheba. She still growls when an off leash dog is running at her (happened today actually) but she can calmly great other dogs on leash.
The dog park was a scary thing to tackle for her too, so if Nanook does have fall out, be sure to take the dog park very slowly. Good luck!! |
