| Subject: Worming perscription???? Fri Mar 22, 2013 11:06 am | |
| This is a silly question but i really don't understand how worming works and i need a bit of help. We've had kiba get worming treatments at her vet visits which has taken care of it up until now. Today is her last vet visit until her 1 year (barring any unforeseen issues) and i need to give her the worming and flea/tick myself.
Here's the issue: Do we need a prescription or can i simply purchase the worming meds myself without one? My vet has not clearly explained it and when i asked again today they gave this vague answer about how i can purchase through them.
I dont necessarily want to purchase through them because they are not cheap but im still unclear on if she needs a prescription. |

| Are you talking about heartworm? If so, yes you need a prescription. It's important to never give it to any pet that has not been treated for heartworm disease. This is because if there are any present heartworms in your pet, the medicine will kill the adult heartworms, which can cause serious heart failure and even death. That is why they are given a preventative, which kills the heartworm larvae before they turn into adult heartworms. So basically you just need a prescription to state your dog is heartworm free However, no prescription needed for flea/tick prevention. They are both given once a month. I am not sure where everyone purchases them from, as I just wrote a topic asking since I don't want to pay a ridiculous amount at the vet either...I've heard of people buying them online I just don't know where! |

| It depends - I do worming a little differently. However, you can go to a vet for it and they should be more than willing to dose. You don't need to constantly deworm your dogs. The only thing we keep them consistently on is heart worm medication.
We use comfortis as a flea pill, but only as needed. So, I have to have a prescription for that. |

| so for my own clarification- i do need a heartworm perscription but i dont need to have her "wormed" for other kinds of worms as long as she's worm-free (which she is) ? and yes, i buy flea and tick meds through 1800 pet meds : )
I guess im confused because our vet gave her sort of an all-in-one chewie that was supposed to knock out all of the above and then they never said "you need a perscription for one thing but not the other". So then today when i went and asked them i said something like "do i need a perscription for her de worming " and got this vague" yeah we sell that here"....okay. lol. |

| Do you know what the chewable was? It may have just been heargard plus. However, I use a dewormer for other worms 1 - 2x a year. This kills anything they may get from the outdoors or eating something they shouldn't have. |
