I live in Abilene, Texas, and have a beautiful 1 1/2 yr. old Siberian female. About 5 days ago she began to act very weird. Normally, she follows us all over the house and lays down where ever you park yourself. She has started going back to her bed next to our bed and just sleeping all the time. She keeps finding secluded places and lays down. When we put her in the back yard she sits by the back door and howls and whines. These behaviors are not normal for her. Her last heat was around the end of Nov. and we kept her pretty secluded and her belly is not large so pregnancy is not the issue. She eats, well as well as any Siberian eats, and drinks plenty of water. We took her to the vet a few days ago and he could find nothing wrong with her. Has anyone experienced this? Randy

Since her last heat was in November and you're sure she isn't pregnant, it's not very probable that she could be having another heat. I wonder if it could be a phantom pregnancy? This is a phenomenon in which a bitch will go through a heat and act as if she is pregnant when she really isn't.

I have never heard of such a thing. It seems like it would have evidenced earlier than this. Have you ever experienced this behavior in your dog.

| Since a heat can last for a month or two, it's possible this could be a phantom pregnancy that showed up two months after the heat began. It's never happened to my dog as she is too young to have gone through her first heat yet, but it's something I'm aware of and have heard about anecdotally from others.

I agree it sounds like a phantom pregnancy. The timing is about right too. I had one go through this. She even gathered up every plushy she could find and lay there licking them as if they were pups.

My dog is experiencing a false pregnancy right now. It's been a little over a month since her last heat ended. She has been somewhat emotional. She will lay alone in a dark room or stuff herself behind chairs. She hoards her stuffed animals licking and sometimes whining as she does so. When she goes outside she attempts to cram herself under the back deck and has tried to carry her toys outside to hide them, though we haven't let her. She hasn't put on any weight but her nipples swelled a little as if trying to fill with milk but went away after a few days. She's even started crying in the middle of the night. It's been odd but the vet said it should pass in a couple/few weeks. I'll be glad when it does. _________________
