So today I figured, its a nice day i'll take cain for a walk! Everything was going well until we came home. On our way home i have no idea what distracted me and what caught cains attention. He sprints pulling the leash out of my hand. I immediately start chasing him as fast as i can, he has gotten a loooot faster, From a distance I see a line of cars coming down the road at a pretty high speed and start freaking out! Just before He jumps into the street i step on his leash pulling and tripping him on the patch of grass right on the edge of the curb of the street. I figured i'd rather have him choked for a split second than have him get hit by a car. I was freaking out so badly! I just picked him up like a baby and walk with him in my arms the rest of the way to my home. Moral of the story: NEVER GET DISTRACTED! all is well now though so at least its in the past

OMG I would've had a heart attack - thank goodness both of you are okay. Just take deep breaths! Happens to the best of us...

That's one reason I wrap the leash around my hand a couple times, that way it's highly unlikely I'll drop it. Glad everything is ok

Yup thats what I usually do, not sure why i didn't have the leash wrapped around and thanks he is sound asleep in his crate

I've has a similar experience, its so scary to watch them run towards a busy street! I'm glad he's ok!!

It's so scary when they get loose, i accidentally dropped Sophie's when her and Maya ran out the door. Sophie just trotted along like nothing happened so it's easy to get her, she's not really a runner anyway. Kay's never gotten loose and Maya's gotten loose twice. Once she broke her choker chain (we don't use anymore) and ran around our yard playing catch me. The second time the back gate was left open and she went out on an adventure, she came back when i called for her though. The third time she slipped her harness and ran into the neighbors yard, luckily they never run into the street but it's so scary!

Glad Cain is ok. I need a leash that can wrap around my handle. Currently using one of those cheap handle ones from petsmart.

Wow I am so glad you both are okay. We have our pups stop at every street and sit before we cross I feel that if they learn this maybe they will stop and sit if they every get loose (probably not but.. you never know). I make all my leash and pad the handles with fleece so they are easier on the hand.

Glad things turned out OK. I know that if you chase after them (hard not to imo when they're running towards a road) they'll keep running, but if you turn and run away in the other direction, sit down with your back to them or lie down they'll get curious and return. Don't think that would have worked well with the busy street and cars, but might be useful should they get loose and there's no immediate danger.

I second Brandon. Looks like it is time to teach your pup the joys of chasing you. It really does help when something unexpected happens and it isn't hard to teach. Just get some treats and start running around the back yard or other fenced area calling for your pup. When they chase you give them a treat. Keep practicing because it has proven invaluable to me more than once. I do everything I can to ensure crazy stuff doesn't happen but sometimes it does and it sure helps to be prepared.

Yesterday must've just been a bad day! The same thing happened to Karli. I've been sick this weekend, so she's been couped up with me. I decided for a walk, got her out the front door and she bolted. I don't know why the leash wasn't wrapped around my wrist like normal but it wasn't and she took off. Luckily, there is a white dog who lives close to the street she was running towards and after clapping to get her attention, he barked at her. She walked over to investigate him (after I walked over to him to show how cool he was) and while they were sniffing noses I grabbed the leash.

I'll start with the chasing me tactic sounds like its fun for both of us. I will definitely pay more attention to him now though no more distractions!

How scary! My worst fear! I worry about this so much (mainly because I'm not very um... stable on my feet anyway), I always have a leash around my waist that I slip the handle through. I refuse to walk them without doing this!
