| We've just had a Malamute dropped off at our house. They thought because we own a husky we'd know how to deal with him. His name is Shadow, and he's a year old. Can anyone give us any info on handling the breed? |

| Some days I think they're similar and others they sounds like worlds apart.
Our Mal is much more affectionate, he's obviously larger. I find he has a shorter attention span and get's annoyed more easy with our husky - he normaly snaps before she does. He digs more than she does, but is less inclined to try and escape the back yard.
You need to be patient, ours is very treat focused and be firm without overpowering. He is also food aggressive with our husky and we need to feed them in seperate rooms. He's also not as much as a shadow as the husky, he likes to go and do his on thing a bit more.
Good luck, I'd really consider whether you want another dog before committing. |

| What do you want to know? They are night and day compared to huskies! Maggie has food agressions too.
Maggie is happy doing her own thing or getting lovings from people. Thats all she does. Her prey drive is crazy!!

| I suppose what I want to know is how much to feed him. He's a fraction under 95lbs, and his previous owners said he had a bit of a runny tummy. This makes me think they may have been overfeeding him. |

| My friend has malamutes and had a husky. She said she's pick a malamute over a husky any day. lol. Says they are a whole lot calmer than crazy, hyper huskies! But that's about all I know about them. _________________ -Sara |

| I think it depends on what kind of food you're feeding. Different foods have different contents and require more or less depending on what kind they are.
I'd go with whatever the bag suggests for his weight and adjust accordingly. If he has runny stools, cut down, if seems hungry still or too much weight, add a little more. |

| Ours gets 2 cups dry food morning and night with some protein either chicken necks or mince. We're slowly cutting back as he gets older. |

They're both on a raw diet, with a little kibble mixed in for teeth health. I know that you feed huskies less than other breeds, and I was wondering if the same is true for malamutes. |

| 2-3% o total body weight is the standard reccomebdation for a dogs. Since huskies don't need much food most people start on 2%. With a Mal you might want tl start at 2.5% or so and adjust as he gains/loses weight. |

| Aside from having similar coats, I don't think they are much alike. Our Sibes were hyper, busy, stubborn, independent and difficult to train. Of course we loved them anyway. Our mal/wolf hybrid was all gentleman. Stoic, affectionate, friendly, obedient to a fault- he would not have dreamed of not following a command. He was exceedingly gentle and calm and never, ever ran off, whereas the husky boys were constantly seeking a method of escape. The mal was much less energetic, he preferred to lie under a shade tree rather than playor run.
Both the huskies and the mal viewed fetching as something only a dumb animal would do.
Our mal passed away Monday. I will miss him forever. |
