| Subject: Ruby (lab) surgery! Sat Mar 02, 2013 10:53 pm | |
| I had mentioned in my post about my girl Lab Ruby needing knee surgery. She had the surgery yesterday and is doing fine. They did an xray of her hips and thank god they are very good! No problems at all. I was so worried they would be bad too just like her knees! I did my research on her breeder, I obtained health clearance certs on eyes and hips from both parents and both were excellent hips and eyes! But my poor girl got the hereditary medial luxating patellas. The right leg is a grade 2 and won't be fixed at this time as it isn't necessary, the left leg was a 4-5 grade and thats what they fixed. She is doing well today, eating/drinking and eliminating. As expected yesterday she was pretty out of it, but today she is much more alert, though still sleepy. I have been confining her primarily to her crate as I was instructed, right now I have her beside me on the couch to give her a crate break. Balon has been a great younger brother coming to get me when she whines! He is being so gentle with her, I know he knows she isn't well! Anyway soon she be able to keep up with Balon, and soon Loki! |

| Have you contacted the breeder at all about her situation? Does he/she have any advice for you? Could the other puppies be effected by the same thing? I am not trying to make you feel defensive or anything so don't get that impression!! I am just curious!
I'm glad to hear she is doing well!! Is it a pretty invasive surgery?? Good thing you have such a wonderful little brother to help you!
I hope her recovery is fast and as painless as possible! |

| Glad to hear she is on the mend, how long do you need to keep her crated? Is there any PT you need to do with the knee?

| [quote="jbealer"]Glad to hear she is on the mend, how long do you need to keep her crated? Is there any PT you need to do with the knee? She was to be kept primarily crated for 48 hours, so today she can be out. I may still put her in her crate to sleep haven't decided. Right now they haven't mentioned PT, she goes back for stitch removal in 2 weeks so I assume they will let me know then! Thanks Kelly, all thoughts are most appreciated! |

| Do you mind if I ask how much the surgery cost? I hear it's $1500-$2000 per knee. Our Glory has patellar luxation which we are trying to manage to prevent the need for surgery but she may need it eventually.
Hope Ruby is feeling alright. _________________ |

| No I don't mind at all-her surgery was right around $700 for one knee. It includes her follow up visit. We have VPI on both dogs so we will end up paying only $100 her annual copay!
She is doing well-still holding it up not walking on it but it could take a few more days before she puts weight on it!
