I was thinking about putting Maya in a puppy kindergarten class and I never been to one and was wondering if it was worth it?

What all is involved with the class?
if I'm already teaching and she pretty much knows sit and shake is it still worth it?

Thanks

We did puppy headstart twice now.
Ours was about 135$(up to 10 classes) and it was a minimum of 4out of 6 classes with leash, potty training, puppy biting and recog basics then 4 classes of more recog, leave it , recall,
■House Training
■Solving problems like jumping, play biting, destructive chewing, barking, and pulling on leash
■Obedience commands including sit, down, stay, come, & leave it
■Socialization to develop a stable well balanced adult dog
■Training methods so easy and gentle that even young kids can do it
■How dogs think and learn
I think I will always do it just for the socialization. And to remember a lot of the "proper" ways to training even though the "what I throw at you" seems to work. Our classes and pups are almost 5 years apart and I remembered alot but twisted my training and this was a good refresher.

Thanks for the reply. I forgot to meantion that I have another dog and I also take them across the street to play with my friends dog. They have two dogs and sometimes her daughter brings her 3 dogs so when they are all together there are 7 dogs in the backyard playing.

Just trying to determine if I want to take Maya to the puppy kindergarten or take Zoë to a training course

Thanks again

I concur with Colleen. We are currently taking Nanook to kindergarten even though we've already taught him "the basics". We take him there for two reasons:

1) Socialization. Even though we've introduced him to friends dogs etc the more experiences and variety a puppy has early on the more well rounded the dog will be as they mature.
2) Training Variety. What's nice about going to these classes even if they know the commands is the change in the environment. Dogs don't generalize training and commands like humans do. Hence why sometimes people will have a dog that will perfectly obey commands in the home, but on a walk completely "forget" their manners. Another benefit to these classes is the training with distractions. Having other strange dogs around as you are going through the commands will help your pup understand and get used to the idea of paying/obeying you at all times regardless of what fun things are going on around him.

Those are just my $.02 though and my reasoning on why we're taking Nanook through those classes. Smile

Plus it is another, unique way in which you two bond and he/she furthers the establishment of trust, fun, and positive experiences.

Just gotta search for "like" words! There are a lot of "like" threads that are named differently. Just like google searching, throw out words that go together and you'll get what you're looking for!
