PostSubject: almost 6mnths old- potty training UPDATE 3/6   training - almost 6mnths old- potty training UPDATE 3/6 EmptyMon Feb 25, 2013 1:39 pm

UPDATE: I'm SO proud because I've kept careful track of my little girls progress and today i can say she went 9 days without having an accident. I know it's still possible that an accident may happen here or there but i just wanted to share my good news that we're pretty much there!! Hooray!

ORIGINAL POST:
So i wrote about this issue a little while ago but basically Kiba's close to being 6 months old and we are STILL potty training. The good news is she's very good at telling me she needs to go out now so that's an improvement. What's difficult is knowing how much water to give and for how long she will hold it in. her accidents have been in the kennel lately which is odd for her. She's never in there for long stretches so it makes me think iv given too much water but when i give her less, i feel like she has trouble going #2 and is super thirsty. Sad Most nights she goes in the kennel at 10pm and gets let out at 7am and is fine but am i still expecting too much at her age? I know the rule about their age + 1 hr for holding it but we put her water away at 8pm. Any thoughts on this?

How big is the kennel? Koda is close to 4months and sleeps through the night most nites from 10-7.. Every once and a while he might wake up around 5 but thats about once a week. When you say he goes in her kennel.. Is that like once a day? Once a week? Cuz its still a puppy.. Koda still get accidents and i expect that.

yeah i guess i should be more specific. I keep a chart of how often she has accidents because it helps me have a better understanding of how trained she is. i know it seems silly lol. That being said she's averaged 1-2 accidents a week for a while now. Her Kennel is 42' i think. We got one for a "Large" dog but its currently divided and she has access to 80% of it. We've expanded as she grows bigger. I can tell her accidents aren't just "oh ill pee in this corner because its convenient" but more of a necessity because either we weren't there or didn't hear her crying to go out. I just need perspective on if this is "Okay" or normal since I'm on a learning curve. She's not my first dog but she's the first dog I've potty trained

Does she have any separation anxiety? I know every dog is different, but by that age (and Karli's not much older now) Karli was potty trained. We'd only have accidents if we didn't pay attention to her signals. We leave a bowl of water out for Karli all day and let her drink as she pleases. On days where I work during the day she's in her kennel for about five hours. Maybe she needs more kennel training? I always feed Karli a couple times a week in her kennel just to keep that training up. Or it could be that you have an extremely stubborn husky but its not unheard of for potty training to take a while.

idk what it is to be honest. She's never loved her kennel but she's "okay" with it. She won't usually go into it willingly unless she's getting a toy out or when i feed her or put special treats in there (about once a day). She seems fine when we are gone or out of sight- thankfully.

It makes me feel bad monitoring her water intake so much but then when i loosen up and give her more she goes and pees in the crate. maybe your right and she's just stubborn. training - almost 6mnths old- potty training UPDATE 3/6 1625187496 Im not mad when it happens, just dissapointed

Is she all clear for UTI? Sometimes they'll hold it because it hurts to go, and then when they can't any longer, they'll just pee where they are. They may give you warning, but pee if you take more more than a few seconds because they're at their limit. Or, they may pee in little amounts because they feel like they always have to go.
If that's the case, restricting her water may make the UTI worse. Always good to keep the pee flowing.
Korra has about an accident every 2ish weeks, when I haven't paid enough attention to her and don't see her signs (or if she's naked and I can't get the collar on her fast enough). When she had vaginitis, she started having more accidents, and after a day on meds it stopped.
If that's not it...just keep at it!

once every two weeks is pretty good! a UTI would be bad if that was the case. I try to keep a close eye on the frequency and right now it seems to be that she's holding it as long as possible and cant hold it anymore and then pees a river. I'm not too concerned medically speaking because it doesn't *seem* to have symptoms of a UTI (although i will be vigilant about monitoring her for that). For a while i got up at 5am every day to let her out and im thinking i may have to go back to that for a bit longer.

I think it's pretty normal, some pups are still having trouble at a year. We're at about 7 months and have about 1-3 wee's a week inside which are during the night - neither of them give signals, particularly if we're asleep. We know they can both hold it through the night, it's just a matter of taking them out for that final toilet stop before bed and making sure they are completley empty - don't go inside until they have done both. There really is no rule on ages, every pup is different.

indeed it may be my expectations are too high. I'm not sure. Some things we've had great sucess with in our training and others are a struggle.

Sometimes i wake up because i'll hear Kiba barking and it either means she's gotta pee or simply that she hears me moving around and wakes up. the two are indistinguishable.

On a funny but also horrible note, i had to wash her dog bed yesterday becuase of the accident she had. When i went to take it out of the washer lo and behold there was a DOG TURD on the SIDE OF MY WASHER! Apparently she REALLY couldnt hold it and i had no clue there was a turd on the underside of the dog bed. UGH! training - almost 6mnths old- potty training UPDATE 3/6 1625187496 Time to run the washer with some bleach i guess......
