I read the post above about raw dog diets, I am okay with the idea of it but I am not sure how I feel about filling Malfoy's bowl with an uncooked chicken breast. I was on pinterest the other day and stumbled on home made dog food, it seems like a good idea and something I would like to try out. Have any of you done this before?

I have made my own dog treats. The dogs LOVE them. I swear my husky would stand on his back legs and dance Swan Lake for homemade stuff.
You just have to make sure to do your research and see what your specific breed needs and make sure to balance ingredients and nutrients. Oftentimes people need to suppliment their dog if they don't take care to balance the nutrition properly. It's definitely not for lazy people.
I find that I love making treats and special occasion meals for them, but I just don't have the time to make everything myself.

Also, raw diets are awesome. Its a thing to behold watching your dogs chomp right through bones and tear through the meat. It is kind of annoying to have to constantly sanitize your floor though - my dogs never kept anything in the bowl. Chicken got drug all around the kitchen, leaving nice slimy chicken "slug trails" everywhere. I had to quit the raw thing because one of my dogs wasn't taking well to it and then my refrigerator broke and I lost all my frozen/thawed meat. Didnt have the $ to replace it at the time.

Also, I'm not sure where she got that dogs can't have garlic. My mom used to feed our dogs Brewers Yeast and Garlic pills for fleas, and put garlic in her homemade liver treats. Definitely research what you shouldn't be using, and verify it from several reliable resources.

Morgan, homecooked dog food is a great diet for dogs and I highly recommend it so long as you know what you are doing, have talked it over with your vet (assuming your vet actually knows dog nutrition, most don't but some good ones do), and have done the research to ensure you are feeding a balanced diet. Like with raw feeding, homecooked diets require plenty of variety to achieve a healthy balance over time.

The meals that were posted in the link you provided are fine however they do NOT include supplemental calcium which you will definitely need to include if you are feeding a homecooked diet on a routine basis. I cannot stress enough how much you need to remember to include calcium otherwise your dog will develop a deficiency. Calcium can easily be included in the diet via ground eggshell, a powdered supplement, or bone meal. There are some calcium supplement suggestions in this thread: Raw feeding problem for a senior

You definitely need to do more research on homecooked diets before making a complete switch. And while raw is the best thing you can feed, I consider homecooked the next best thing. I know raw is not for everyone, so if you can do the research then safely and comfortably feed homecooked then I say more power to you.

I want to get my husky on the raw food diet but I'm concerned about the chicken, I've read that they can get salmonella from raw chicken and eggs. Also, i was wondering if i could put my 6 yr old lab/pit mix on a raw food diet. Please help if you can

Dogs' stomachs are stronger than ours so salmonella in their food will not make them sick the way it will people. Any age is fine to start a raw diet, after a dog has been weaned of course.

My Husky (Axel) is 18 weeks, does he need any supplements in addition to the raw food for the proper growth and development? also, would i need to include fish to give him the omega 3 and 6 he needs?

Check out this sticky. Val wrote an extensive intro post if you're considering, or already feeding a raw diet. It goes into great detail about the percentages of meat and organs and what supplements you need.

Supplements are not necessary although many of us do use and recommend them. There are existing threads also on what supplements we use and why, so if you have questions on that please search those out first as they may already answer your questions.

Fish is also not required but do offer a good amount of variety to cover all the nutritional bases. Case in point, my sibe cannot tolerate any fish in raw or any other form. This definitely would not prevent him from thriving on a PMR diet that did not include fish.
