| Good morning, and hello from sunny Northern California! My name is Jenny, and my husband, Keith, and I are in the process of adding a husky to our pack. New currently have an approximately 3 year old cat, Sirius, a 13 month old rescue mutt, Cinna (we call him a shepherd/houng dog mix, but he most closely resembles a Catahoula Leopard Dog), and an 11 month old kitten, Tonks. We placed a deposit with a husky breeder back in December, and are waiting for our opportunity to pick a puppy.
We've known for several years that we eventually wanted to own a husky - my parents rescued a husky mix from the pound when I was 18 (living at home while going to college), and spending time walking her, taking her to the dog park, etc., naturally resulted in meeting many other huskies and their owners, which led to completely falling in love with the breed!! We've done a lot of research over the years, and learned that huskies are not necessarily the easiest breed, especially for new/first-time dog owners. However, after successfully adopting and raising Cinna, we feel as though we are ready for the challenge!
All three of our current pets have been rescued (both cats from the SPCA, and Cinna from a dog rescue group), so this is our first time adopting from a breeder. There is a phenomenal Northern Breed Rescue in the area (NORSLED), but they rarely have true puppies available, and with our two cats, we really can't take any chance of adopting an adult husky with an unknown background. We are currently 9th on e deposit list with our breeder.
We don't know for sure, but there is a chance that we will get our little girl next weekend. The litter is 8 weeks old as of today, but the puppies just got their first shots last week, so the breeder wants to hold on to them for a few more days to make sure there are no bad reactions. Then, she will begin contacting the folks on the deposit list to set up pick-up appointments. The current litter has one male and six females, and many people ahead of us on the deposit list have stated that they want males, so we're hoping that enough people will pass on this litter that we'll have the opportunity to choose a puppy! There are two in particular that we have our eyes on (black and white girls with blue eyes), so we'll see if either of them are available by the time our pick rolls around. If not, we will likely pass and wait for the next litter, which is due to be born within the next week or two.
So, consider this a pre-introduction! We are so excited to meet and bring home our Luna, whether that is next week or a couple of months from now. In the meantime, we would love to hear about anyone else's experiences adopting from a breeder/being in limbo/trying so hard to be patient! |
