Nikko got his dew claw ripped off at the dog park on Saturday so we had to take him to the vet and they bandaged him up. I hear most breeders will have them removed when they are a puppy. The breeder I got Yukon from did not remove them, which now I wish they had!

Koda has his on all 4.. The breeder removed them from the other parts of the litter but her and her vet decided not to remove his because his were more like a extra toe than a dew claw i guess.. Thats what they said.. I dont know much about dew claws but that is just my experience with them.

No, it doesn't necessarily mean they are not reputable. If they have done hips and eyes on the parents and taken measures to make sure the parents conform to the breed standard, then they probably are reputable. Some have their reasons for not doing it, but if that reason is because it takes time and $ to get it done, then I wouldn't put them in the reputable category. There is no excuse for leaving rear dew claws. It says right in the breed standard that they should be removed. It says front ones may be removed, but most show dogs (in the US at least) will have them removed. It's typically done soon after birth - long before one can tell if a particular pup in a litter is going to be 'show quality'. So those breeders will do the entire litter. Whether a dog is to be shown or not, I prefer to see dewclaws removed for exactly the reason you described: because they can get caught on things and tear.
There are some breeds where they are left on. And in some countries they don't remove them.

Some do have 4 dews, more often they have just the fronts. As long as they are just the regular dews on the front (not extra toes) they should be left alone they tie into the balance of the movement. If they are more like the extra toes they should be removed, rear dews should be removed regardless.

I don't know much about the dew claws at all until now. I checked them both and they only have the front ones, they do not have dew claws on the rear legs.

Yes, they definitely should be kept trimmed. The longer they are, the more of a chance of them getting caught on something. Plus if they get *really* long then they tend to curl back into the leg, which probably isn't too comfortable.

Danzig only has one dew claw on his back left leg. It's so small, we didn't even notice it until it grew out a bit. I just keep it trimmed myslef, or the groomer does it for him.

My sibe has all 4 of his dew claws. He was a stray before we adopted him so no telling what his background is. In any event, they have never been an issue for him in all his years.

Thane has front dew claws and uses them when gripping things like his bone, no rear ones though. He's no show dog but I kind of like them lol

I like to have them off. They can get ingrown and infected or torn off and both cases are very painful for the dogs. It's usually the back floppy ones that cause problems, the front ones for the most part never have issues.

Some breeds are required to have their rear dew claws (Great Pyrenees for example who have double rear dew claws). In breeds that have those types of dew claws - they're attached to the bone and can be incredibly painful to have removed.

Sometimes in breeds that normally have those rear dew claws removed they too can have ones that are attached to the bone - but it is usually not the case and they have the ones that are floppy (not attached to the bone).

Rear dew claws should be removed by the breeder within 1-3 days of birth. If a dog still has them most vets will remove them at the request of the owner at time of spay/neuter.

I've never had a problem with the dew claws. My Pryenees had both her rear dews and we never once had a problem with them getting stuck on anything or her messing with them. You do have to keep them trimmed so they don't become ingrown or curl into the pad/skin. Aside from that they're no different in caring for the dogs other nails.

My female has fronts and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. She has ripped them twice, and bleeds everywhere. My male came from a very reputable breeder and had his fronts removed (no backs existed). The majority of show dogs will not have them, I can't speak for racing, but I still haven't seen a dog with fronts in ring. Just my experience.
