| So I was searching for training programs to help with my pup and stumbled across a site called sit means sit, as it turns out they are rather expensive but it seems worth it. I called for a free consultation and was demonstrated just how trained they can get their dogs to be. I know for a fact that they use an e-collar and my question is has anyone here ever tried it out? Once they are trained substantially do they always need to have that collar? I personally would prefer the treat method but I was really impressed on the amount of control! Would you recommend it? |

| Most sites don't recommend electronic means for husky's. Since they have a thick undercoat they don't feel it as sharply as a dog without the thick undercoat and because of their shear will and bullheadedness they tend to just ignore the shock and keep going.
That said, I have never used electronic means to control a dog because I personally believe that your dog should sit when told because it respects and trusts you not because its afraid of the pain. Just my opinion. I would go with the treats, its much nicer to your pet and family member.

| I would avoid any sit that uses an e-collar straight off the bat. Compulsion training teaches a dog to listen to avoid pain, not because it wants to or values you more than something else. If you don't have to use an e-collar, then don't. Especially not on a puppy that doesn't know how to avoid the pain because no one taught it what the right thing to do IS.
If you want to use an e-collar, then teach the dog the RIGHT thing to do first, before going to zapping it for doing the wrong thing. Reinforcing the right behaviours instead of using negative reinforcers is a very reliable training method when done right. Off-leash recall is really one of the only time I would consider incorporating an e-collar on a husky. |

| I don't recommend e-collars. It's unpleasant for the dog and there is a risk that they can cause harm, especially if a dog is already fearful. A study that was published last year looking at recall training by ordinary owners found that people who used an e-collar reported worse recall than those who used positive reinforcement training. I wouldn't want a dog to be obeying just because it was scared.
Positive reinforcement training - with treats - helps to build a good relationship between you and the dog, and it's also fun for the dog. |
