So we are getting a 5 week old Puppy in three weeks.. I know that is still young for a pup to be taken away from its mother....we do have another dog that is 4 years old..I hoping that she will take on the mother role for the new puppy. I'm still concerned with feeding a puppy that young and taking him outside. Please I need advice and help

Any particular reason why you must have the pup that early? Puppies who stay with mom until at least 8 weeks old are better socialized, healthier, and generally easier to go through puppy phases with. It's not just about mom... It's about their littermates too. Puppies that age are usually being weaned off mom and on to wet/ semi-solid foods. So if you must- you can begin feeding a higher quality puppy food at that age. I would be cautious taking the puppy out and around other pets or where other pets use the bathroom because a puppy that young does have a fragile immune system... Another reason why it's better to stay with its litter... They do get a lot of immunity through mom.

I don't want to come across as rude but what kind of "good" breeder would take a baby away from it's momma that early? Vacation or not, that baby should stay with mom until he/she is at least 8 weeks old. Have the babies been vet checked or anything yet? I would be very cautious about this breeder, something doesn't sound right to me. Wishing you lots of luck!

Not being mean but.. The OP didnt ask about opinions on the breeder.. They asked about how feeding as taking outside. They already said they know 5 weeks is to early. But thats whats happening.

Since your friend is getting a litter mate, can you keep the two pups together for 3 weeks after you get them - either at your house or your friend's? It's not ideal, but at least they would both be getting some additional time with a litter mate.
As for feeding, use a high quality puppy food. Many pups are still occasionally nursing at that age and getting antibodies from Momma's milk, so be extra super cautious about potential communicable diseases (one should be anyway..) Is your yard fenced so that no other dogs can ever wander back there? If so, that should be okay for taking pup out to potty. Some diseases, such as parvo, can stay n a yard for many many many years. Keep in mind too, that even if your older dog is vaccinated, she can still track home many types of diseases. So I would be cautious about taking her out too. (at least until a few rounds of vaccines). Good luck!!

Sorry I upset you so much! I was just stating my concern. I do agree with Mishia'smom on this one.

If you, Huskies4ever23, do decide to take the puppy I wish you nothing but luck. I hope your puppy is healthy and happy. Smile

That may be very well, but if there's a chance the OP can walk away from this litter and wait for another one (from a different breeder), I think the OP will be MUCH happier with her pup in the long run.

To the OP - I know you're super duper excited, and believe me, I get it - most of us on here do, but with the same token, you also need to ensure that it's not the excitement of a new puppy that's pulling you to this litter. Puppies are born all the time, if I were you, I would wait until I found another breeder. You're already questioning this one since you "don't get" why the breeder would just up and leave the pups at 5 weeks. Trust me, go with your gut, there's a reason you have instincts the way you do.

Sorry to pile this on, but I really feel that this breeder would only be in it for the $$ and not produce quality or care for their pups. Just my New Puppy concerns 2144500265

As for your original question, the puppy will have to go out every hour (yes, both day AND night). The general rule of thumb is one hour per month of age they are. I would try and thoroughly clean off a section of the yard for the pup, although I'm not quite sure how you would do that, but make sure the other dog doesn't use it until the pup has been fully vaccinated?

Feeding is going to be more trickier since they would be weaned off close to that age - I would second Kristina about the high-quality food. Dogfoodadvisor.com is a good place to start.

There is absolutely no reason to be sorry, and you shouldn't be.

Your advice was not off topic in any form as the OP does not yet have the puppy. One of the courses of action the OP can take in this case is to forfeit the purchase.

The other option is to get educated and ready for what raising a 5 week old puppy means and any challenges that may or may not come along with it.

There is solid advice all around in this thread. I hope it helps.

I agree there is no reason to be sorry.. I didnt post that because i wanted you to be sorry or to start a argument. I posted it because ive been there when people just go on about how bad that breeder is.. The op already said they know 5 weeks isnt good.. But if they already love the dog then get them. I made the mistake of getting my dog from a breeder a i wouldnt get another from but i dont regret doing it cause i got a awsome pup.. I just didnt want this to turn into a thread about bashing the OPs breeder because thats not what they asked.. But W.E. ill just keep my mouth shut from now on.

The goal was not to deface you or your point of view in any way, shape, or form. Apart from quoting the entire thread, I didn't even reference you or say you were wrong in the slightest Eric. I was responding to Kelli's last post and words. Keeping your mouth shut is the last thing I, personally, would want. Everyone is free to post their feelings and thoughts on any topic as long as no one is being attacked and the train of thought remains respectful. I don't expect everyone to always agree, but I do expect people to be civil and understanding of one another.

The goal was to explain why that particular train of thought is acceptable in this thread. The puppy, though I'm sure is plenty cute and maybe has a deposit or is paid for, still is with the breeder. There are other avenues that can be explored.

I have a bleeding heart for all animals. I don't kid myself into thinking any less from anyone else on this forum. Love, however, isn't the be all end all of a problem. It is always done with the best of intentions and is admirable. I wish I could do half the things some of the people on this forum accomplish on a daily basis for dogs alone.

Emotions however are easy to play off of and easily exploited, which just perpetuates the cycle. Taking a step back and thinking logically about what is really going on is what is being advocated here, from an outside perspective.

The puppy is still up for sale so it is still an option to walk away. The OP even declared they had requested the puppy at least be held until 8 weeks of age and was told no as the care giver of that animal was leaving for vacation. Either the litter wasn't planned, planned properly, or the breeder is less then ideal.

Either way the options presented thus far are fair answers and are in no current need of moderation, at least from my point of view. As the thread, or story, evolves I'm sure more focus will be given on particular ways of helping.

~Chris~

The goal is to educate and help.

There is never any need to be sorry for a dispute. They are a healthy aspect of all communication Wink.

The fact that we aren't all typing in caps, using l33t speak, and spouting profanity is a miracle in and of itself.

Don't be shy, a lot of the members are very strong with health, breeding, training, ect. If you need to bounce any ideas around that's what they are here for.

May I ask where the puppy is coming from? You are more than welcome to PM me. I understand if you do not want to share. In the event that you do decided to wait, I know there are a few fantastic breeders with litters available now. Michigan is a hot spot for great Siberian breeders. My hope is that they have priced the puppies accordingly because they are more than likely not wormed or vaccinated at the age of 5 months.

Good luck, and we are always here to help.
