| So, I'm normally in the habit of using thicker keychain rings to attach my dogs tags to their collars, but I HATE the big extra loop hanging between the D ring on the collar and the actual tags. Does anyone use anything with a bit lower profile to it? It needs to be very strong, as my dogs play in all sorts of shrubbery and wooded areas.
Also, I'm thinking of making a couple leashes out of nylon climbing rope and carabiners, if anyone has any pointers on that project, id love to hear |

| Someone made a full harness + leash out of nylon climbing ropes with pictures on the forum.
I know I've read it.
I did a couple of searches but can't find it and can't remember the author for the life of me Eric, though I feel as if they are / were a long time member. If you dig deep enough you may be able to find it or if I do I'll edit my post to include it.
In terms of thicker rings when hiking or fielding we use harnesses. We allow them to pull in harness so hiking we let them go full out at the end of the leash. All our Harnesses are double ringed.
Hopefully someone has a bit more help for you. ~Chris~

| Eric maybe something like this would work for the tag connector.

| Small S hook from Lowes or Home Depot. They are pretty cheap and strong. |

They had a similar item at home depot, but its gauge was thicker than the diameter of the hole, so I wasn't able to get them. Thank you! |

| Eric: Here's a link to the thread about the leash I made out of tubular webbing and a 'biner. Also unless you have an industrial sewing machine, I would not recommend making your own harness. Eddy, aka harisse, who used to post here did have one and sewed his own harnesses. He said they were very strong. For the time you would have to put into getting access to such a machine and the cost of the materials, a commercially made harness is pretty inexpensive. You could get one from Nodkyn (Sorry, I mercilessly flog their stuff. But it's great.) for $18-27. They have fast service too, like a week. |

| I don't think the link worked...
I'm not big on harnesses, unless I intend for my dogs to be pulling, and I'm not big on pulling when we're just out walking. Everyone walks on a slightly padded flat nylon collar, with metal D rings and buckle, except Panzer, who has the cloth martingale version, to keep her tiny head frim slipping the collar and dissappearing.
The harnesses I have are intended for use on a taut line. They don't fit right when there is slack on the line.
I'd like to make the leashes out of climbing rope and carabiners simply because I have plenty of old rope and biners, (I'm an REI addict, so new gear is a common issue), Its all tested to bear a lot of weight, and Id hate to waste it. I was thinking a couple figure eight loops, one real small for the side the biner is on, and one bigger for the hand loop would probably do it. They bind and become hard to undo pretty quickly, and they are strong enough for me to tie myself off with when I rock climb.
The clips are because my dogs play extremely hard, everywhere, and I'm sick of losing tags at the dog park. For 5 decent tags its like $54.92.. |

| My dad and I made a lead that I use when hiking with Pippa and we bought a metal ring and made that onto the lead itself that I can connect a carabiner to. If that makes any sense? That felt safer to me that worrying about making the carabiner onto the leash. |

| Hmm, I'm not too worried about having the carabiner attached directly to the rope. After all, I am making the leashes out of the very same rope and biners that I've trusted to support my weight as I dangled off the edge of a cliff. I have the same knots in mind too. I've also considered getting one of those survival paracords in a leash, with the little survival kit laced into the handles, so that my dogs leashes could be used for all sorts of tasks in an emergency. |

| I would use a fisherman's. really streamlined and will cinch nicely onto the binder. Then you could just do a simple overhand on a bite for the hand hold. A bowline would work nicely too. |

Fishermans knots that I know of are the one that joins two lines by tying overhands over the opposite standing lines, and the one to tie a hook.. please elaborate. |

| I just tried to find instructions online and I clearly have no idea what the name of the knot is but it is tied like a double fisherman's only around on itself. If you'd like some instructions to tie it I can do a step by step for you. |

| Your knot kind of looks like a modified taught line hitch. It's missing a loop though.
Edited after reading the whole thread. Comments were irrelevant. |

| It is similar except the end is brought up under all the loops rather than just under the bridge. It also only slips and doesn't hold position like a taut line.
I was taught this knot for attaching a carabiner to a climbing line when accessing a tree and have trusted my life on it many times. As long as your rope is strong enough this would be a good knot for attaching a cara binder to a dog leash.
