New from Israel Empty
PostSubject: New from Israel   New from Israel EmptyFri Feb 01, 2013 6:36 am

Goodmorning!

All the way from Israel, Since 4 weeks we are the owner of our lovely Joy
New from Israel 19296_12
Ofcourse that is a picture from when the first day she came with us.

Now I have done a lot of research already, downloaded some e-books, looking at forums, searched around in google.
Let me tell you guys something about Joy, maybe you guys can help us out over here.

Joy is a very smart dog (but i guess everyone is saying that about their own dog, right Wink )
We teached her how to sit, give a paw, give other paw, to come to us.
She is getting enough excercise, every morning I am walking with her for 30 minutes, we go home she gets her morning nap, around noon we go to the carwash (we are the owners) where she has about 400m² to run around and to do whatever she fancies. Then until the evening most of the times she is busy with her own stuff, and in the evening she will be taking a nap again.
Which is ok, i understand she is still a puppy and she needs lots of napping time.

Now the thing is, when we are at home she is the most good trained dog, never does anything wrong, plays with her own toys, doesn't touch anything that she isn't supposed to touch. She is potty trained, let us know when she needs to go for a pee or so.

But when we go out, all of a sudden we see this other side of her, we close for her the bedroom door, so she can not enter, we close the bathroom door so she can not make a mess over the (apparently she loves our toiletbrush). We move the coffeetable to block the diningroom chairs and the tv so she can not go behind or jump on the chairs. So basically she has a big area to play, whenever we leave we leave her enough games to chew on, and enough toys to entertain herself with, even the ball with the hole in it, i filled with different tasty things. She does not really seemed to impressed. Everytime we come home the house is a big mess (it is getting a bit better though). I understand that this can be a fear of her, to be left alone? What to do against this?

Then there is this other thing, my fiance is trying to play with her sometimes, and she is not really connecting with him (he is spending time with her, this is not the problem). She just does not want to play, she doesn't like balls, and if she is already playing with it, she just wants to play alone. Sometimes it looks like she want us to play with her, but then at the moment that we grap the ball and start throwing it for her, she just walks of and goes to her own corner.
It is getting to a point, that we do not know how to play with her, she doesn't seem really amused.
Maybe you guys have answers or tips that we can use.

Both of us had dogs already, they were completely different, as we understood husky's are completely different and need to be trained in a different way.
The behaviour that Joy shows to us, is it normal for a husky?

Thank you all in advance!

Hey there and welcome!
I'll be the first to say that 4 weeks old is much too young to bring home a puppy, but since you already have your beautiful girl, that's all I'll say about it. The second link below has more info on the issue Smile

I'm not sure if you said exactly how old your puppy is, but the general rule is 5 mintues of walking for every 1 month of age. Any more can lead to health issues, and we don't want that!

I'd reccommend crate training. It's not cruel at all, it's like a safe place or a den. Not only will it help the destruction, but it is safer for her so that she does not swallow anything that could harm her. Since she's not used to being in a crate, it might take some time to adjust. Here is some information about it: https://www.itsahuskything.com/t918-crate-training

All dogs are different, but huskies do tend to be more independent, that may just be her personality.

I'm not going to say too much, but this is a great place to get started: https://www.itsahuskything.com/t7664-so-you-re-bringing-home-a-puppy about why they should be older when they come home, walking, crates, and a whole lot of useful information. It's a great place to start Very Happy

Again, welcome! Don't hesitate to ask questions, and I can't wait to see more pictures. You have a very cute puppy.

Thank you so much, we got her when she was 8 weeks old, i would never take a puppy away from her mom at 4 weeks old Smile
she was born on 1st of november, so she is almost 3 months now.

Anyway, i will take a look at the crate thing, is it not too late though to start with this?

One more question about the crate thing, if i get her one now, am i supposed to get her a crate that will be big enough for her when she will be fully grown or do people only use the crate for a dog while they are still a puppy?

Oh, lol. I just realized her picture looks way older than 4 weeks, doesn't it! Embarassed Sorry.. It's 1am here and I'm burried in law textbooks Mad

It's never too late Smile Just make sure that you don't use it as a time-out, and put lots of treats in there. You can also feed in the crate, which helps a lot with the positive association. Korra will walk into her crate and wait while I prepare her food, I don't even lock the crate door. When I have guests over and they're too loud for her, she'll just go play by herself in her crate Smile

You can save money and get one that will fit her when she's full grown. There are metal crates that come with an adjustable divider so that as she gets bigger, you can move it to make more room, but when she's little she won't end up using the corner of the crate as a potty area!
I use a metal crate and a plastic airline kennel. If you get a plastic crate instead, you can put boxes in the back of it to make it smaller. My girl prefers her plastic one, maybe because it's more den-like, but we put a big towel/blanet over her wire crate and she likes that just fine too.
