We recently got a Siberian husky puppy named Nala. She is nine weeks old. We've had her for almost two weeks. The first few nights she did very well sleeping in her crate. Unfortunately, she hates being crated during the day. We got an addition to attach to her crate as a play area so she has more room during the day. She escaped several times. She finally is unable to escape, but she still acts out when in there during the day, crying for hours on end. To make matters worse, we made the mistake of letting her sleep in bed with us on Saturday night. Both Sunday and Monday nights she has not slept, howling and crying all night. She also has peed in her crate twice now - she had not done this previously. Is she acting out or is this simply normal behavior?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, you are going to have to be consistent with crate training or she will never learn. I am a crate training failure and allowed my two to sleep outside the crate (big mistake). Now, whenever I do have to crate them (when I'm gone) they throw horrible fit's and scream/howl until I let them out.

Our newest 11 week old puppy is being properly crate trained and she loves it! The trick is to not give up! We put a soft bed on one side of the crate and left the other side open just in case she has an accident (which she hasn't). At night, we put a sheet over the crate. I put a sheet in her crate as well, so that it has my scent on it, so she doesn't feel alone. We also put in a yummy chew toy for her as well! You can try a stuffed kong. We use deer antlers.

It's tough love until she get's the hang of it. You just gotta stick with it and don't give up! If you do, you're going to end up with a Husky sleeping in you're bed and doesn't want to be crated while you're away. It's not fun, trust me I know!

We have a blanket/t-shirts and special toys in the crate for her, but she really seems to hate it. I am a bit worried that one night of not sleeping in the crate has ruined the 9 prior days of crate training. I hope she will get back into the groove. Thanks so much for your input!

One night isn't going to ruin what you've already done. Just get her back on schedule.She's probably just testing her boundaries and figured that by her crying will give her, her way. Don't let that be the case. Stay consistent!

Think of it like this, if you're dieting and you have ONE slice of pizza, it's not going to ruin all the hard work you've already put in! It's just up to you, to get back on track of eating right!

Sorry if that's a bad analogy, only thing I could think of.

Haha, no, it's a great analogy. She's just a sassy little thing and she definitely is testing the waters with what she can get away with, which unfortunately is extremely frustrating. I'm hoping she'll get back into the habit this evening.

I hope she does too! If not, don't get frustrated, because she will get the idea.

lol ... After reading my post's here, I really need to take my own advice! It's so much easier giving it than it is following through with it.

Don't worry I'm in the same boat sorta, I started out with him sleeping in the same room with me that worked out fine, its when I started getting him to sleep in other rooms thats when the problems started. He shredded the blanket that covers his crate today.

Her crate is in the bedroom and we generally will lay toward the end of the bed so she can see us until she falls asleep, but after letting her out of her crate one night, not even that is working. Last night, bedtime was 10, she was up at 12, 3, 5 and then up for good at 7.

I didn't read replies, but with the peeing in the crate, if you gave her additional space (the play area), she has enough room to where she can pee and comfortably go lay somewhere else. That's why they say to have dogs in a crate without too much extra room, as once they have control of their bladder, they generally won't go to the bathroom where they sleep and whatnot.

We had just kept her in the crate originally the first few days, but decided to try the play area to give her more space to roam and get energy out, but I think we're going to go back to just the crate.

With crating our puppy we bought the biggest one they had (for her adult size) but she would pee in one end and sleep in the other with no reservations. Eventually we just realized that we had to use a crate divider to make the space smaller and it worked like a charm! now she only has accidents in it if i oversleep or once when she was a little sick.

As much as i don't like limiting her space and wish she could have more, it really does work. I think most huskies can be professional complainers when they would prefer something different (like sleeping in your bed) but i'm sure you can get your pup back on track!!
