| Wasn't sure if this should go in training or racing since it's kind of a bit of both but...
My female is a year old now. I'm looking into getting a dog scooter. I've ran my two on my roller blades a few times but that was pretty much a nightmare both times. Steele is good. He knows all his commands. So, naturally, I let him lead. Problem is, Jenna doesn't like him leading and will often times jump at him mid-running to bite him. I'd be fine with her being in lead but she doesn't know her commands and seems to refuse to learn them. How do you guys keep your dogs from jumping on one another?
Also, how do you get your dogs not to slam on brakes when they have to potty? Jenna is pretty good. She'll hold her stuff but Steele has this habit of running all out and then just SLAMMING on brakes to squat and poop, which then causes a huge tangle up. Jenna is still running, I'm trying to stop, and Steele ends up getting yanked between the mess because he has to poop << Is there a way to train him NOT to poop mid-run, or to train him to poop and run at the same time?
I really want to get into scootering and by the time I save the money up for the harnesses and scooter, Jenna will be the perfect age. But these are issues I just can't figure out how to deal with in the mean time. I found awesome trails down here and I really want to use them! |

| Not sure if this will help but, I started on the walk with mine. We have very structured walks. During our walks he is not permitted to sniff around and mark eveything up unless I let him. I always had designated areas that were sniff/potty areas, then back to work. This kept him in "working"mode and that was able to transfer for when we bike ride or run so he's not dragging me everywhere. Because if left up to him....he would drag me everywhere |

| Unfortunately poop happens, even on racing teams. If your team was bigger she'd just get dragged along until she learned to poop while running, this isn't the case for your team though. You'll have to keep a watchful eye and when she's ready (you'll notice the 'wink') slow down and command to stop, allow her to go. Movement produces bowel movement. I found with mine if I put them on the out rigging with their harnesses on they'll get excited enough to eliminate before we leave the truck, but I still deal with poop runners- Commands are usually learned with time, young dogs don't always have the mentality for it in the beginning. The jumping on one another can be frustrating though, but often it's their own frustrations needing an outlet. She doesn't know what you are asking and is taking her insecurity out on the other. I'd work with her individually more and start to add him when she is more ready. She will get there, and it does take time. Especially with a small team- be patient |

| Thanks for the advice, guys. It's much appreciated. I'm looking to order some skate brakes to replace mine (since they are non-existent) and when those come in, I'll be running Jenna by herself until she understands the commands and such (on top of walks with commands, of course). She's wicked smart so I know she can learn them. I think Steele may just be distracting her/giving her a reason to ignore me.
Maybe I'll put Steele on a strict potty command. This is something I thought that we had solved with him, but we took a break in running on blades and now we're back to slamming on brakes to poop multiple times in a run. I'm trying really hard to be patient. Lol. Most of this is just things I've noticed and want to learn how to deal with when it happens before bad habits are created.
Jenna is a new addition to the family. She was abused and neglected for 9 months out of her year long life. She's come so far in such a short amount of time, it's incredible. I'm just so excited to be able to let her do what she's bred to do and to let her live out a life she deserves! |
