Hello, all. We brought home Mishka yesterday (Yeah! Pictures to come!) and she is wonderful. I am attempting to crate train, which I have done
for three goldens in the last three years. Very little crying. However, as you can imagine, Huskies are nothing like goldens, and this little one gets simply hysterical in the crate. Tries to dig her way out, biting the wire sides....I am afraid she will hurt her teeth.

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

She's probably just throwing a tantrum because it wasn't her idea. Try giving her food when you put her in the crate, and not leaving her in it too long if she acts uncomfortable. She'll probably get over it lol. Huskies definitely take more patience.

I had a golden growing up and he was just wonderfully easy to crate train. Our husky has been a nightmare in the crate. She howled all night the first night we had her. It sounded like a chimpanzee instead of a dog. She progressively screeched less and less. We crate trained by the books doing positive reinforcement and things and its take a while for her to be okay with it. She still talks in it sometimes but much much better. I think some huskies are harder Than others.

Well, it seems not all huskies are alike. Yuki was easy to train. She's /never/ whined or thrown a tantrum in there. But, I accustomed her to it right away. As soon as she fell asleep when she was a little puppy I'd put her in the crate. I gave her peanut butter kongs in her crate when she was extremely hyper and needed something to calm her down. I also gave her interactive toys in her crate such as the puzzle toys that spill food out. So her crate was a fun place filled with food, treats, and nap time It still is her fun interactive place, she gets fed in there and a kong every time I leave for work. Hopefully my experience has some tips that will help..

We do that too but it's taken longer. Maybe for us it's that we got her at 7 was old? I feel like I read that the younger they are the harder it can be. I could be totally wrong on that though b/c it's something I vaguely remember reading....

Yuki came home at 6 weeks old so I don't think its an age thing. Try encouraging her to go in the crate and leaving the door open when you're home. Put a kong in her crate, if she tries to pick it up and take it somewhere else, throw the kong back in the crate.

It's only been one night right? If I'm reading your post right? If it is your first night, you are expecting waaayyy too much out of your puppy. If her breeder didn't start crate training her, your puppy has no idea why she is stuffed into this weird metal thing. You just need to give her time. When she cries, IGNORE her! Completely ignore her, don't look at her, don't say anything to her, and let her cry it out.

Trust me, Sheba cried for the whole first month. The first four days were absolute hell. She will cry it out, and she will get over it. Make her crate a fun place and make it her space. With some puppies it helps to put a blanket over the crate so they can't see you.
