| Hi everyone! I just got Nike she is a all white husky puppy female. I got her at 7 weeks old and she will be 9 weeks old tomorrow. The first night we got her she howled the entire night, but hasnt howled since. We have the crate near our bed. However whenever I need to goto work she whines nonstop until I get home(2-3 hours at most). She is still pretty young so hopefully she will get over being alone soon. She is almost potty trained, she goes and sits at the door whenever she needs to go out, but has been having 1-2 accidents a day which all occur in front of the door.Im guessing that her bladder control isnt great but im so happy she knows to pee and poo outside now! She loves chewing on everything so im constantly telling her no and giving her something shes allowed to chew on. At 7 weeks she was about 9 pounds, we are going to get her weighed in a day or so she seems to be getting big though! we currently feed her twice a day at 7 am and 7 pm and she will eat anything. We give her 2/3 a cup at each session and she devours it within seconds. Should we be feeding her more or is that just right? It seems that she could a 10 pound bag in a day if the food was laid out for her . The breeder had her on purina puppy chow, but we are switching to Blue Buffalo Wilderness Puppy Chicken Grain Free once it comes in the mail. Everything I have read about husky females says they will get around 35-50 pounds. However her grandpa was 110 pounds and her dad was going in that direction also. Is that normal? Her dad was all muscle and gorgeous, I just wasnt sure how big I should expect her to get. Also her tail curls up, her parents tails did also. I wasnt sure if all huskies tails were like that or is it a fault?(she wont be showing so I could care less just curious) My roomate has a 2 year old lab and they play together all the time, she is a great pup! Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, this is our first puppy and we want to do everything we can to ensure that she becomes a great husky . Here are some pictures of her now. 7 weeks old:8 Weeks old:9 Weeks OldOh I also forgot to mention that on the ride home she threw up . We found a worm in her throwup and got her dewormed right away. After the deworming went away my neighbor (who happens to be a vet) found out that she had acouple fleas on her. I put some stuff on her to get the fleas off and now she seems to be doing great! Stressful week though I feel so bad when she gets sick! |

| Welcome! She is really cute On the food, a pup that young should be fed 4 times per day, and a 1 1/3 cups total probably isn't enough. I think we were feeding somewhere along the lines of 2.5 cups when ours was a new pup. Go off the guide on the bag when you get the Blue Wilderness (a great food, btw, we had ours on it for a while), and adjust as necessary if she doesn't eat all of it. Sounds like her dad and grandpa were bred way out of standard as well, so she could well be above breed standard as well. Not a big deal, just don't breed her yourself (for lots of reasons). Their tails all curl as well, so don't worry about that either. Sounds like you guys are doing really well on the potty training, and those kind of accidents are perfectly normal. They really don't start getting a whole lot of muscle control for that until around 12 weeks, and those muscles aren't fully developed until around 6 months. We were at 1-2 per day within a few days of getting ours, then it tapered off to around 1-2 per week, then by around 4.5 months we were pretty much done with accidents in the house. Good luck, and never hesitate to ask us a question if you have one. | Thanks for the suggestions!
I was abit worried with her tail and parents weight I thought she might have been a malamute. The akc papers said only siberian husky though. How does a dog get bred out of standards? I dont really care I actually hope she grows to be 80 -100 pounds as long as shes healthy I will be happy.
The crate she is in now is quite small, she has enough room to turn around and lay down fine. Since she is doing very well with potty training could we switch her to the massive crate we have so she has some more freedom and doesnt hate the crate as much every time we leave? Thats the only thing shes having trouble with at the moment, she just howls nonstop whenever I leave her alone.
Shes so cuddly and playful though! we took her to see a 140 lb mastiff yesterday and she charged right at it and started play biting it! |

| If you get a bigger crate, still keep a divider in it for a while. You don't want to invite and accident and cause a regression with the potty training. If she's got AKC papers, then you probably don't have anything to worry about, and Malamutes don't have the blue eye gene so if you see a Mal with blue eyes it's a Mal/Husky mix.
People breed out of standards to create bigger or smaller dogs to appease buyers. It's actually a fairly irresponsible practice, because you can introduce a lot of health problems that way. It's kind of like the new designer "breeds" like Labradoodles, etc, where breeders are trying to make money instead of trying to better the breed. This isn't a dig at you at all for going to a breeder that bred big dogs, btw. It's kind of the reality of the breeding world. I went to a backyard breeder for mine, just because I didn't know any better at the time. _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | Thanks aton! I had no idea about breeding out of standard this is my first pup. If it does look like she is going to grow out of standard are there any specific health problems I should be watching more closely than others? Heres another pic of her that I just took She sleeps with her tongue out ! Its so weird! |

| The big things to watch out for on Huskies are hips and eyes, since the vast majority of BYB's don't test the parents. Hip dysplasia isn't as common in Huskies as it is in some other breeds, but it definitely is a concern. Keep an eye on her as she grows, and if your worried about it you can have her hips tested at 2 years. I'm pretty sure we're going to just to be on the safe side, because we want to do all sorts of things with Ghost. Also, if you ever see anything off with her eyes, get her to the vet because Huskies can have eye issues as well. Don't beat yourself up about possibly going to a bad breeder. I was pretty upset about it when I figured out what I'd done, but what's done is done and all you can do is learn from the experience. IF we go to a breeder again (I hope we can find a rescue that will approve us between the cats and me being active duty), I will definitely do even more research and not support a BYB. Nike really is super cute, and make sure you take tons of pictures as she grows up. The puppy stage goes by way too fast _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | Thanks for all the welcomes / suggestions! Yea Nike already chews up that bed, its going to be gone in a few months. I can't wait for her to grow up , my gf (co-owner) doesnt want her to grow up so fast though . We have some hikes and camping trips planned this summer in Minnesota. Do you guys think that she will be too young to go? (6-8 mos old) She will probably need to be trained to stay calm in a canoe and I dont want to ruin the trip for everyone else cause shes too young. |

| I don't think she'll be too young. The big thing you don't want to rush is running her on hard surfaces. You don't want her running on like concrete or stuff like that until she's 9-10 months old so you don't damage her growing joints. _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | Hey everyone As I said above we noticed that Nike had worms acouple hours after we got her(7 weeks old). We took he to the vet right away and got her dewormed. She was pooing worms nonstop all that day and stopped after that. The vet gave us another dosage to give Nike 10 days later. We just gave her the dosage last night and we found a small worm in her poo this morning . We are going to take her to the vet right away tomorrow morrning. I feel so bad for her . Would worms cause her to want to eat nonstop all day? We have been regulating her food to what the bag says, but she could eat all day if we let her. Any suggestions would be great, I cant believe she still isnt fully healthy . She hasnt eaten anything outside either since we got her. I have been watching her like a hawk making sure she learns what to eat |

| Just got back from the vet today! She is 9 weeks old and up to 11.5 pounds. The vet said that her weight is fine, what do you guys think? I think she looks fine, but she has so much hair its hard to tell . The vet checked her stool and found no worms in the stool she made this morning. She gave us 1.5 tablets of Drontal Plus to give her friday for roundworm and tapeworm. We switched her into a much bigger crate last night, she whined a little but than seemed to be fine. She got us up at 4 am whining (she has a whine that she has to go outside and a whine that she wants to get out). She peed a ton so thats good to know she still has yet to pee in her crate since we got her at 7 weeks. She is still having accidents 1-3 a day , Every one is right infront of the door though. She sits at the door and waits every other time she has to go out. She has mastered sit ! Today at the vet she was moving around on the scale and we said sit and the vet was shocked how well she listened! She is getting real good at the come command also. I think the next one we will move onto is stay. |

| That's good to hear that the vet didn't find any worms today, hopefully Nike will stay worm free.
11.5 lbs at 9 weeks is probably pretty good, depending on her frame. Ghost was about 11 lbs when we brought her home the day she turned 10 weeks. If you're worried about her being over or under weight, a good reference point is the ribs. If you can actually see them she's too skinny, but you should be able to feel them without any trouble. If you can't feel the ribs, she probably needs a little bit of a diet. Our vet also impressed upon us that even though pudgy puppies are really cute, it can be really bad for their growing joints. _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | My girl reacted the same way to Blue but after about a week and a half her body adjusted to it. The vet said it was probably because Blue is a much richer food than what the breeder was feeding her (Kirkland). The vet even told me to take her off the Blue - which I didn't listen to, needless to say 2 months later she is just fine, has normal stools and just loves her food! I absolutely love your pics of Nike - she reminds me of Luna when I first brought her home. Love all white huskies! |

| Hey Everyone, here are some pics of nike at 12 wks. She is doing amazing! She hasnt had an accident in like 5 days and only whines when we leave her in the crate alone for the first couple minutes. She went through some regression in training last week because we switched the treats. We gave her some salmon treats instead of milkbones and she was not interested in them at all. We switched her back to the milkbones today and now she listens all day and is doing great with training again. She is loving the blue buffalo food now. We mix in 1 tbsp of pumpkin at each meal since she had loose stools with it. She loves the pumpkin so much! She weighed in at 17 lbs at 12 weeks. Is that high /low or perfect weight? Thanks!! |

| Oh i forgot to mention too. She will not eat the milkbones whenever we give her a treat for going in her crate. She will eat the treat instantly if its not for going in the crate! I think shes trying to be stubborn with us!
Are there any good meaty bones or treats that she will go crazy for that I can give her only when shes in the crate?
She is a puppy too so I dont want anything that she might be able to choke on |

She eats the puppy milkbones no problem outside of the crate, she just wont accept them for going in the crate. I think shes trying to tell us that she doesnt want to accept a treat for going in her crate |

| I don't buy milkbones just because I never have, although my old pet sitter used to give my dogs milkbones as treats and Yuki got horribly sick off of them. One of the reasons I don't go back. One thing that really helped Yuki warm up to her crate was simply feeding her in it. Her favorite treat though is a peanut butter kong. |
