Toy Agressive Empty
PostSubject: Toy Agressive   Toy Agressive EmptyTue Jun 18, 2013 11:45 pm

Hello,

I am a new member.  I could use some advice.  I have a 4 year old female husky who is spayed and I recently adopted 1-2 year old (according to the rescue) female husky also spayed.  I've had her for about a month now and everything has been great.  Both dogs play very well together and get along great.  They share water bowls and don't bother each while eating.  They know when each other has had enough play time and will walk away.  My concern is with the younger one, Kiyah.  She always wants the toy that the older one, Sidney has no matter what it is.  Sidney is more laid back and most of the time will just find another toy.  I've been trying to teach Kiyah to let Sidney have her toy and to get another one instead.  Well today I walked out of the room for a minute and that's all it took.  A fight occurred.  I pulled the two apart but it was too late.  Sidney was bleeding.  It was very minor but the fact that it went to that measure is upsetting.  Now this is my first time having two dogs and obviously I took the toy away.  My question is how do I go about fixing the toy aggression?  Apparently my tactics are not working or maybe there are better ways.  I'm also afraid after this incident that both are now going to be more territorial over toys.  Has anyone dealt with this before and can offer me some advice?  I would appreciate it.  Thank you!

I currently only have one Husky but she will snap at other dogs over food or toys. When I do get another dog though I would take all toys away for a while until they get used to each other more. Any bones are given in crates or in separate rooms. Exercise them more together (and separately), I always notice my dog doesn't seem to care as much about things when she is tired. It is pretty hard to train that behavior out of a dog. Since it is a form of aggression I think the leash might intensify their behavior too. Best and safest bet is to just keep all toys away until it is crate time or they are separated in different rooms. Look up the youtube video "Establishing Pack Structure with the Family dog" by Leerburg. It really shows just how early this behavior sets in and the reason it does.

My foster and Juneau are currently doing this as well. They don't bother each other while eating, drinking water, and etc.

I don't really have a solution yet - except to not let them have toys. When I do let them have toys, they are monitored RIGHT under my nose with no exceptions. Maddie has attacked Juneau twice (when they both had a toy each) and now Juneau is scared of Maddie and has started to lash out at Maddie when she has a toy. Not good.

My only solution so far is to watch them closely with toys. When you notice one starts to get aggressive with a toy from the other, immediately scold the one that is acting aggressive (with a firm look in the eyes, gentle but firm grip on the muzzle, and a "NO!") and take the toy away. Keep repeating this until the behavior starts to go away.

Good luck! I definitely need to work on this too.

Ya, I really don't have any advice either. Kato and Karma still fight over toys. Just this morning they fought over a toy. Karma took it first and was playing with it, and then Kato saw how much fun she was having with it so he ran over to her and took it. I went to water the grass and heard them fighting with eachother. So I grabbed the toy from them and said "No fighting". They both just looked at me and walked away. Ohh, the joys of owning Sibes!! Rolling Eyes

Thank you everybody for the replies and advice provided!  I will be checking out that video "Establishing Pack Structure with the Family dog" by Leerburg.  I will definitely be working with them more separately and together.  For the most part, they get along amazing with just a few incidents.  I obviously want to nip it in the bud before it becomes a habit and if taking away the toys until they are ready to share is the answer than it may be the way.  I already do supervise them with the toys.  You all have beautiful fur-kids by the way!
