When should I stop the potty training? Empty
PostSubject: When should I stop the potty training?   When should I stop the potty training? EmptySat Jan 12, 2013 2:10 am

Hello, I am new here!
And I brought my Yuki a week ago!
She is about 11 weeks old now.
I am doing potty training since I brought her last friday, and she made few mistakes in the house, but most of time I bring her to the outside, and she does her potty at the outside.

I am basically doing the training according to the book called " 7 days housebreaking training".
I wake up, go to outside, come back give food and water, and put her in the crate, 3-4 hours later, feed again, outside, put her in the crate, 4-5 hours later feed, outside, 1-2 hours later give her some water, outside, and before get to sleep outside again. I am doing this schedule, but I take her to the outside more than 8 times a day.

She never makes the mistake inside of her crate, but she had mistake inside of house... I do not think she still does not recognize her bathroom very well.. so I cannot get her out from her crate except for going outside.. I really want to take her out to my house and give her some free time ( i tried, but she had mistake when I took her out).
so I really need an advice for the time that I should stop potty training with her!

She shouldn't be in the crate that long. She needs the free time. Potty training never stops. If my dogs are confined inside longer than their bladders can hold it, they will mess in my house too and they are potty trained adults.

You have a puppy. She is only 3 months old. She really can only control her bladder for about 3 hours. Therefore, she should be going outside every 3 hours. It shouldn't matter if she's in her crate or not. She will learn that she goes potty outside as long as she is brought outside often enough.

I wouldn't listen to that book. I would just take her outside every 3 hours like she needs (including overnight) and slowly increase that time as she gets older.

I've read Huskies can take a bit longer to train. Just make sure to rush her outside when you catch her in the act and give her a dried liver treat (or some other treat she LOVES) when she potties outside.
You should never stop training her. Just keep at it until she learns

I still haven't quite figured out why they have gotten that reputation!

Thank you all!
So, I will take her to the living room tomorrow,
and i will keep my eye on Yuki, so I can catch when she needs to go outside to potty.

Thank you very much for the information, I would just keep her on the crate all day..
Thank you again!

No problem Smile Just keep an eye on her and make sure she goes out every 3 hours and she should be fine.

If you find that she starts having accidents, take her out more often. Every dog is different and some need to be taken out more than others. There was a time I took Koda out every 45 mins or so, just to re-train him after we moved. Don't give her the opportunity to mess in the house and she won't Smile Make it easier for her to potty outside and she'll catch on that she should only potty outside.

Just make sure that you praise her everytime she goes potty outside. "Throw a party" and make a big deal when she does. Potty training is all about setting her up to succeed.

My Sheba was so difficult to potty train. She knew what I wanted of her and she knew where she was allowed to go(outside) and where she wasn't allowed to go(inside). Like all puppies though, she couldn't control her bladder..AT ALL! She needed to go outside literally every 15 minutes for the first 3 months. The reason she was so difficult is that as soon as she had to go, she HAD TO GO! To her it was like as soon as she realized she needed to pee, she peed. She would give me maybe three seconds of a heads up, and if I wasn't fast enough..too bad mom!

Just remember that she will mess up and that it isn't her fault and she's not doing it for "revenge". For some odd reason a lot of canine owners seem to think their dogs have an accident in the house to "spite" their humans. No. They had an accident because their owners expected too much out of them.

Good luck!! This phase is sooooo much fun!!

Sheba grew like a weed!! She was 18 pounds around 15 weeks of age, and then I swear she just STOPPED growing! She is 8 months and only abooout 32 pounds. She sprouted like a weed through her first 4 months and then slowed down after that. So no, she's normal Smile.

I used to have to take Kota out every hour to potty. He learned within a month though to ring the bell when he needed to go outside. Sarabi, on the other hand, took 3 months to potty train. I think of potty training as a preventative measure... If you take them out before their bladder can't take anymore, then you prevented an accident in your house. When I took Kota out hourly, if he didn't go I'd bring him in and put him in his crate for 10-15 minutes and try again until he did. If he did, his "reward" was to play in the house Smile Yuki doesn't sound too far behind for her age, so be persistent and she should be fine.

The training stops when she's trained. I agree, I think thats too long in the crate, she needs time to run nad play and be a puppy.

When I was potty training Alpine, it was a pain at first. I lived in an apartment & was using peed pads (bad mistake). He always went on the pee pad, no matter how much I took him outside. When should I stop the potty training? 85993 Luckily I moved into a new house after a month & completely got rid of the pee pads. He only had a few mistakes inside, when I took him outside I would take him to the same area to pee. And for 4 months he would always return to that spot, no matter what, even while we walked, he would hold it until he got back to "his spot". Took him a long time to realize there's a whole yard to potty in Laughing Now, after 6 months, he goes to the back door to tell me he's gotta go, but I still watch him like a hawk.

It all depends on the dog whether the training takes longer or shorter period of time. Some dogs take months, others weeks. Cally was potty trained early and had very few accidents. Just keep consistent. I agree that the crate time is a little too much for a puppy of that age, they need lots of socialization with you. Also need to be taken out every 2-3 hours. Honestly I don't think that the training ever completely stops, it's like with basic training- the dog may know how to sit or lay down but you need to consistently do it all the time or else the dog will "forget". Everything within training the dog is about patience and consistency. Remember, set your pup up for success and it will happen! Even if that means going out every 1 1/2-2 hours, find out what signs they show before they need to go and get them out there before they have accidents! Lots of praise too!! Good luck with the potty training and congratulations on your new pup!! She's adorable! Smile

Thank you guys again !
Today, I started to take her out to the outside of her crate(which means let her free to play inside of all the place of my apartment). And she is doing real good job right now, but she had mistake in the crate while i was vaccumming, but everything else is good.

The vacuum may have scared (literally) the pee out of her if she's never been around one before. Karli was outside as a puppy before I got her so she has no clue what a vacuum is.

Consistency is key. Take her out ten minutes after eating and drinking. Karli drank a lot and I was taking her out all the time. But she learned quickly that outside was the place to pee and now if she has an accident she hides because she knows she shouldn't do that in the house.
