well today i got home and nala was gone.. fortunatly they contacted me from an animal shelter about an hour away and told me that one of their volunteers who was off duty, found her and took her to a petsmart where she was scanned and they called me... i was wondering if there is anyway i can avoid this happening again, i have been taking her running lately but other than that i dont really interact with her, i closed the way she got out when i saw it and i'm going to regularly inspect the yard for any weak points...

what do you all do to keep your huskys at home? i know affection is key, but i play with her about 15 minutes a day, every other day it's about an hour? and i like i said we run about 4 miles a day.. am i doing something wrong? YES i do have a very big yard and her and my lab play together all day long...

the 15 minutes of play time doesn't count when my son and niece play with her, when i groom her or when i do little command training... i heard letting them in the house everyone once in a while keeps them from getting bored is this true?

Huskies are known for escaping. I think people here generally agree that keeping them indoors or in a run while you're gone is the only way to be certain they won't get out.

A fence that would easily keep a lab in, won't even slow a husky down.

Huskies are social animals, so they want to be amongst their people. You can't just throw them in a backyard and expect them to be like a lab - they need mental stimulation and affection. Please consider bringing her inside with the family. I know with our Frosti - she would get upset that we were gone and would try to go looking for us. Fortunately, she is safe in our home when we're away and have slowly trained her to understand that we're coming back.

since the incident i've left her to go in n out freely and she chooses for the most part to be outside playing with the lab, matter of fact she hasn't made an attempt to get out yet... probably because i patched up her escape route

I use a three barrier system to keep mine in while i am at work, 1 is the crate, 2nd is the doors on the house, third is a 5 foot tall fence with a 6 foot tall gate that over laps the house by 3 feet and has a system where you have to lift the gate 4 inches to get it out. So far so good here. They are husky houdini's. Sammy can get out of a crate. Cali hasn't mastered that yet but she can get out of her harness without unbuckling it or defacing it in any way.

I leave my 2 huskys outside all the time with only the fence to keep them in, Jade is a digger and has gotten out a few times, you just have to be craftier than the huskys.

My barrier system is the fence, make sure there are no holes or anything in it and is in good repair. And make sure there isn't anything near it that your puppy can jump on then jump over the fence, ex. grill, dog house, crate, wheelbarrow, deck.

To prevent the digging out i have lined the edge of my yard with chickenwire layed down on the ground to 3' away from the fence. If you don't have grass yet this is great and you can just lay the sod down on top of it and it will grow to be a part of your lawn and will also hold it in place, they will try to dig and hit the barrier, and unless the are extremely crafty and decided to dig a tunnel it will keep them from getting out.

the third thing, is retaining wall blocks, they are pretty cheep and can be bought at home depot or lowes or similar. but i have lined my fence with them 2 rows high, this prevents my puppy from squeezing through any spaces between the bottom of the fence and the ground and also prevents any problems with the edge of the chicken wire being pulled up by crafty dogs.

If you havent put in a fence at all yet the best bet is to trench in 2' of chickenwire or chainlink fence along the length of the fence and attach it to the bottom of your fence slats....but alas not many of us are building new fences and this isnt really an option for most.

After armoring the yard like this Jade has not escaped...except when my girlfriend left the gate open..... So for my puppies i know this works. Ive seen a couple places where she has tried to dig out through the chickenwire, but it stops her every time. Now she just digs in the vegetable garden which i guess is better than digging out.

Hope this helps

I interact/bond with my dogs through training, taking them to the dog park, walks, and spending time with them throughout my day. The main thing is training though. Since we started hard core training, the bond between Hayden and I has increased tremendously!

If I were you I would purchase a 30 ft leash and take her to the park for some play time, so she feels "free" but is secure.

First, I would suggest crate training. Huskies are known escape artists. Even if you think you have every route blocked they will find a way. There are some that may think crating a dog during the day is cruel, but so is the chance that your dog may get hit by a car. Even if Nikko got out of his crate my house is locked so he could not get outside.

well she hasn't made an attempt thus far, and i've sealed the gap between the 2 fences in the corner with boards and big bucket. she hasn't made any attempts thus far, and i doubt she will consider doing so for a while now that i give her liberty to enter and leave the house as she pleases (to the backyard atleast) and running her regularly has helped a lot aswell.. but no dice on the digging i guess it just a hobby for her, i don't take pride in my landscaping anyway so she can go nuts
