| Hayden is a little over a year old now and still doesn't lift his leg. He just stands there and lets it flow. Some times he will hold his back leg up just a little, but that's as far as it gets. I've grown up with mostly male dogs and they've all lifted their legs before they hit age one.
I'm so not complaining, because I don't want him to start marking!
Anyone else have late bloomers? |

| Lucian doesn't either, and probably never will. Lol. I don't mind though. I can imagine him peeing in my neighbors yard or in my own driveway if he started lifting his leg. |

| Blaze lifts his leg about half the time. Ha usually stretches and lifts one leg a bid. when peeing.
I was told that males need to be around other males to learn how to lift their leg .

| I was told by a vet tech that if they haven't started lifting their leg before they are neutered, they won't. Not sure if that's true or not. But she was convinced, she had her dog neutered early just for that reason. |

| I've known many intact males that never lift their leg. I think some just don't for whatever innate reason. |

| I was told by a bull mastiff owner at the dog park today that bigger dogs don't need to lift their legs to pee. Thought it was interesting enough to share! |

| I don't believe that it has anything to do with them being "taught" by other males dogs to lift their legs. I don't know what the reason they do/don't do it to be, so I won't say.
My oldest male never grew up around male dogs and started lifting his leg around 7 months. He's now neutered and almost 2 and still lifts his leg 90% of the time.
My youngest has been around male dogs of all ages (including Indy) that always lift to pee, and he has not once lifted his leg. He always squats. He's 8 months old. |

| I had always thought it had to do with if they were neutered, and at what age they were neutered. Both mine were neutered at 4 months of age, and Nikko never lifted his leg, but when he was about 6 months old I saw him do it once. Now, once in a while he will lift his leg, but about 90% of the time he just stands there and pees.
Yukon however started lifting his leg when he was about 5 months old, and most of the time he goes he will lift it and pee on the bush. He will lift his leg about 75% of the time.
I don’t know what triggers them to do that, maybe it is instinct. I know Yukon didn’t learn it anywhere because he does not interact with other dogs besides Nikko very much.
