crate - Car ride and crate train Empty
PostSubject: Car ride and crate train    crate - Car ride and crate train EmptySun Dec 30, 2012 12:52 am

Luna is 6 months + now. We came a long way but we are happy with her in our life. Listen to us when we are not around dogs or walking with her Rolling Eyes she is a great dog beside the fact that she doesn't cuddle. We Basically have two problems, she doesn't like car ride for more than 5min. Rhode island is small, you can drive through the state in about 45-55min. Things are not far from our home. The dog park is about 10min away, even that's long time for Luna. She will cry none stop. Is there a way to make her enjoy the ride?

The other problem is crate, Luna can sleep in it for 8 hours without going crazy at night, but she hate being crate during the day. At first we thought she might need Exercise, every Thursday (only time she's crate for 5 hours) I go drop her off at doggy daycare for half a day before putting her in the crate. When my girlfriend get home the crate is moved from its Original spot and what ever she can get her paws and mouth on is destroyed. She managed to escaped from the crate once from the metal she bent. The hole is so small I have no idea how she managed to get out of it without getting hurt.

Our Neighbors is getting tired of her howling/barking

Hi Junior. After Lola tore up a metal crate and destroyed a rug, our trainer had us buy a plastic sided crate. She suggested that we anchor it to the wall. Since we didn't want to ruin our woodwork, we put a storage ottoman with a weight in it to hold it in place. We give Lola a frozen stuffed Kong to play with when we put her in the crate. And I also put her nylabone in there and leave the tv on. Make sure that leaving is low key. We were also told to crate her from time to time even if we were home.

Lola is good in the car so I'm not much help there. I do put her nylabone in the back of the jeep with her.

Good luck and patience. You'll find what works for you.

crate - Car ride and crate train Empty
PostSubject: Re: Car ride and crate train    crate - Car ride and crate train EmptySun Dec 30, 2012 9:03 am

I would try putting her in the car and not doing anything- watch her. Does she instantly start pacing and whining? Or does she sit calmly in the back seat and wait for you guys to go somewhere? My husky used to pace and whine in the back seat. He LOVES the car- he's excited because he knows we're going somewhere fun. So, what I did in the beginning was made sure he was a little tired out ( we usually rollerblade if I'm in a hurry.) Then when I put him in the car I have to get him to calm down- this can sometimes take a little bit-esp. in the beginning. I just wait him out and use food to get him to focus on me rather than be excited. I ask him to sit or lay down in the back seat and give him a treat. If he stands back up as i'm trying to close the door then I ask him to sit or lay down again, and I'll repeat it until he stays there when I close the door. If we're going for a longer ride like an hour or more I'll give him a frozen stuffed kong or a rawhide to keep him busy. Of course he gets up when we're driving- he wants to look out the window and check out his surroundings, but there really isn't anymore whining. It takes some time, but basically you want the dog to understand; "yes, we're going somewhere. No, you don't need to whine in the car." You might even have to have her practice getting in and out a bunch of times, so that when she gets in she is calm. As for the crate thing, if she's going to daycare for a half day on the days she comes home and stays in her crate- have you ever tried a full day? This might be beneficial to you (and your neighbor) when you're trying to get her more comfortable in her crate. Very Happy

I have no advice on the car issue, but just want to say that it can't be worse then this Razz Kody goes INSANE in the car! Whether it's to the dog park that's 10min away or SIX hours! This was on the way to the FL Snowdogs camping trip in February Shocked

Now, I must say that he's gotten much better. He'll whine, but not constantly like this. Crazy dogs!

crate - Car ride and crate train Empty
PostSubject: Re: Car ride and crate train    crate - Car ride and crate train EmptySun Dec 30, 2012 2:52 pm

Karli is good in the car so I can't be much help there but for the crate...

I found that if Karli can see out of her crate (we have a big plastic one) she whines. I give her toys, food, and frozen kong, but she'll still whine. We have a big comforter that we don't use anymore (its twin size so it doesn't fit on our bed lol) that I cover the crate with it IF and only IF she gets noisey. Otherwise, I leave it uncovered. It took us a couple weeks to get her used to her crate and now she goes in there when she wants to. The key is to make the crate a safe place for her. Never use it for punishment. Hide treats in it throughout the day when you're home so you can see her go in to get them. Give her treats when you crate her so that she associates it with good things. Hope this helps.

Sarah, we just took a the tv from my brother and put in the office where she sleep, calling direct tv next week Neutral she's hardly watch tv

Rig, we can't do full day because we don't have anybody that can go pick her up. She instantly start pacing and whining. If we leave her in the car by herself for 2min She will chew on the seat belt Evil or Very Mad
