| Hi everyone!
My family dog Sammie is a maltese/shih tzu mix and he is 5 if I remember correctly. Normally he gets along well with any other dogs our family friends bring over, granted they are all small breeds (yorkies and pomeranians). So naturally I thought Sammie would be just fine with Elf, my 1yr old Husky when I go back to my parents. But the two do not get along at all. Its mostly Elf just trying to play, but Sammie snarls everytime Elf gets near. It's possible that Elf's play is just too rough for Sammie. I just want everyone to be friends.. lol
Any advice on how to get some peace in the household? |

| When I moved in with my parents while my husband went to basic, Koda lived with 3 chihuahuas. They all got pretty pissy with him any time they got near. He would just go to their area, woo, stretch, prance a little (not close enough to prance on them though, haha), sort of gently paw at him.. and they got to where they'd chase him out the dog door and sit by it, and he wouldn't come back in. It took about 4 months for them all to actually not feel threatened or stressed out by him coming close to them. I'm not sure how long you've had Elf, but in my opinion, it just takes time and letting them get secure with eachother. They worked it out in our household. Both times we've visited home with Rogue, she will just stand next to our oldest chi or try to touch her nose to her (she doesn't lick, just puts her nose up to other dogs and humans' faces) and Baby (chi) will get yippy and snappy, though none of the chis have ever actually gone any further than a "get out of my space" warning.
Dogs coming over and a new dog in your territory permanently are two different things. Huskies and smaller breeds have very differing personalities, and it'll take time for the smaller one to adjust to the way your husky interacts with them. Some dogs adjust quickly, others take several months. |
