Yesterday afternoon, I found a Siberian Husky wandering the streets near the store I was at. She was in the road and got clipped by a car. She seems fine, it appears the car just knocked her over. When I got closer to her, I realized she was pregnant and due to give birth at any time. I called Animal Care and Control and waited two hours but they never came, even after 2 more calls to them. I could not in good conscience leave the dog alone and scared, she seemed like such a sweet heart, so I brought her home. She was very passive, did not mind the landlady's dog who lives on our property and even got along fine with my cat. I even tested taking away some food I gave her to test her disposition... again she was very passive. After a couple of hours it seemed she was starting labor. I tried to make her as comfortable as possible while waiting for Animal Control. She began to nest on the comforter bed I made for her. My husband, my daughter and I all expected for her to deliver them last night. After pacing around quite a bit and panting she got comfortable and went to bed. Animal Control never came. We decided this morning that she would stay with us and her deliver her puppies here. I didn't have the heart to take her to a shelter (we only have one no kill shelter in our area and from what I've heard it takes weeks, sometimes months for them to accept an animal).

All day she seemed like the labor has calmed. I assumed her pre-labor signs from yesterday were maybe due to the stress and the issue with being knocked down by a car. This evening, the signs of labor started again, but she laid with us on the couch, allowed us to rub her belly (I could feel the pups moving around quite briskly) and acted just as passive and sweet as she had yesterday.

I decided it was time to get her to move back to her nesting area, so I got a treat and led her over. I gave it to her and she immediately hid it under the blanket. When I tried to spread the blanket out a bit more for her she nipped at me, suddenly becoming very protective of her treat and her area in general. As you can imagine, I backed away quite startled. Now she is just in her spot in the corner and is switching between panting and snarling her lip revealing teeth, whenever I come within 10 feet of her.

From what I have read online, I know I should give her space, but ultimately my question is how normal is it for a dog to just go from a sweet passive dog to aggressive snarling and growling while in labor? She doesn't seem to be in any pain. She's not howling or whimpering at this point, just panting. To be honest, her panting has quieted in the time it has taken me to type this out. Any time I even look at her she perks her head up and looks at me very mistrustfully and starts to curl back her lip slightly. I am just concerned about the change in attitude so suddenly, especially since it seems her labor has quieted. Any advice from someone with more experience with the breed would be helpful. I am scared that I may have bitten off more than I can chew.

Where are you located? I know a number of breeders and can put you in touch with one close to you if I know of any. They should be more than willing to give you advice.

Personally, I would take her to the vet to get checked out and have the vet go over what all you'll need to do. The vet can see if the car accident hurt her at all and if the puppies are still alive.

I know that an animal in labor will tend to get protective. If I were you, I would probably call a local vet at least just to make sure everything is ok. She also may be microchipped and have a family out looking for her. They can scan her. Good luck and thank you for not leaving her on the street. My concern is that the accident could have killed a puupy and that will block the birth canal for the rest and they will all die and can lead to moms death. So please at least call a vet.

Ok i dont really know much about labor... But i kind of wonder if when you gave her that treat she thinks its her pup.... Because i recently read a little bit about phantom pregs and they think a bunch of random things are the pup and protect it.. Im not saying she is having a phant preg because u felt the pups.. But i wonder if she got so agressove because she is thinkin that is her pups..

From a distance, all we can really do is speculate. Her change in mood doesn't surprise me, especially with what she's been through. However, I agree with others and I think you need to call a vet or let Sarah put you in touch with a breeder. Calling a local vet will get the word out that there is a stay husky with puppies and it will get you information about the birth and her condition.
