Hello, I was wondering if anyone here has ran into a phantom pregnancy with their husky? Dakota has been acting very strange lately and everything I am seeing is leading me to believe she is having a phantom pregnancy.

I've never had a female, but I know a lot about phantom pregnancies anyways..like a few symptoms:

Does she 'baby' toys or stuffed animals?
Is she denning? (Making a 'den' or a little home with clothes, blankets...something she wouldn't do normally)

What is she doing that makes you think she's having a phantom pregnancy? Knowing more will help us to help you. Smile

I haven't experienced it with a husky, but I had a dog go through it in the past. She would take all my socks to the closet and lay with them nestled between her front legs while she nuzzled and licked them. She was sort of protective of them too (toward the other dogs - never humans).

Ava had one before she was spayed. About 60 days after she went out of heat, she made a "den" under the recliner and had a "litter" of toys that she kept either in the den, or on the couch with her. Her litter consisted of three or four little stuffed squirrels, a giraffe, and a few others. She licked them and nuzzled them, and even tried to get them to nurse. She was really protective of them, especially after Dad picked one up, squeaked it, and then tried to play fetch Phantom Pregnancy? 1625187496

I also knew of another husky who gathered up a litter of DVD cases to mother. False pregnancies can really range. It can be weird in a kinda cute way, like mothering, all the way up to the dog producing milk. There have even been cases of dogs going into labor and delivering sacs/placentas/icky stuff - everything except actual puppies.

What is Dakota doing? How old is she and how long ago was she in heat?

OK so she has been going into the closet whenever she gets a chance and will bark and yelp at us whenever we get close to her in there. She has also been trying to squeeze under the bed even though nothing is under there. She had her last heat about 2 months ago and she is 3 years old this month. I just want to know that she is OK I worry when she starts acting weird.

Is there a reason she's not spayed?

We were planning on breeding her but we have recently decided not to.

Good.

If you get her spayed, she'll most likely stop having a phantom pregnancy and will obviously not have anymore. Talk with your vet about it, see what they have to say. There are some side effects to fixing your dog - I can provide a reference if you want - but the benefits definitely outweigh the possible side effects.

My sister's Staffy had about 4 phantom pregnancies. She Got swollen nipples and expressed colostrum. Eventually she delivered a placenta and amniotc sac in the back yard.

When she was spayed at 6 years old she stopped having them.

That's not really enough information to go on regarding whether or not she is having phantom pregnancies, but if she is having them, spaying her should stop them.

Soshanna's first heat was young, 6months, and right when I brought home Mixie, so she just took care of Mixie extremely well., It was honestly pretty convenient..

Got her a new ball toy to throw around outside. One throw and she grabbed it and ran back to the house didnt want to play with it at all. When I let her in she took it straight to the bed and laid down with it.
