PostSubject: New puppy owner, trying out crate training   crate - New puppy owner, trying out crate training EmptyThu Dec 13, 2012 5:59 pm

I have read alot of posts on this site about everything possible. I will be picking up Vader the 22nd of this month and was wondering if it was possible to have him somewhat trained by the 7th of January? The reason for my asking is because the semester to school does not start until then. I just want to make sure I have a schedule/routine down with him so hes comfortable while I am out at school. Also since I will be with him everyday for those days would it be possible for him to develop seperation anxiety?? Just want to prepare things so they possibly could go smoothly!!

I don't think 2 weeks will be quite long enough. He will be 10 weeks olds and won't even be able to hold his potty as long as you need to be gone for college classes. At best he might be comfortable with his crate for an hour or two at a whack by then.

I forgot to mention that my boyfriend works at home so when I go to school I will be taking vader to him until I'm done for the day. Which I'm hoping will help things a little

Oh, well that changes things. As long as your boyfriend is consistent with the crate training as well, I don't see any reason things wouldn't work.

Make sure your boyfriend is consistent and on the same page with you about the crate training. Maybe in the 2 weeks before you go back to school, you can get Vader familiar with your boyfriend too. I'd probably slowly introduce separation to Vader, but ONLY a little at a time (like, 10 minutes max at a time) so anxiety isn't so high, it'd already be something he's familiar with.

When I had Kota while I was in college, my roommates were supposed to watch him while I was in class but they didn't follow my rules and it really hindered things and they'd get mad if he peed on the carpet. If your boyfriend and you are on the same page and are consistent, it should all work out fine (and prevent arguments! :p). Good luck! Smile

Karli was potty trained within the first two weeks after we got her, but you have to be really consistent. My hubby isn't used to having a dog, so he would forget about her and she'd have an accident. Definitely make sure you both are on the same cage. And start the crate training immediately, it will help with the separation issues.
