2. Read the Stickies and Announcements. Each sub-forum may have specific rules which trump the Forum Rules in cases where there may be conflicting information. Read the rules of each board before you post so that you are clear on the expectations of the staff.
3. Respect ALL Staff and Admins. These people volunteer of their time and MUST be respected as well as their word adhered to. They are responsible for maintaining a free, open, clear and organized forum. Anyone found to be openly undermining any official ruling by a staff member will be warned.
4. Signatures: One picture only and no links. Images: To keep the forum looking neat and tidy, we ask that members insert just one picture only in their signatures. The picture should be no more than 200x500 pixels and should be of an appropriate subject, for example, your dogs and their names. Should you need assistance creating an appropriate signature, please PM an Admin and we would be happy to help! This is to ensure that signatures remain a welcome addition to our forum instead of a cumbersome distraction. Links: Hyperlinks in signatures--unless to a personal blog or photo stream of your dogs (like Flckr or Piscasa, for example)--are strictly prohibited. Running with my puppy Empty
PostSubject: Running with my puppy   Running with my puppy EmptyThu Dec 13, 2012 12:54 am

I've seen some people say that you shouldn't run a husky until they are a year old. Is this for longer runs(3+ miles) or just running to run. My puppy is 11 weeks old and I've been taking him out to run about 3 miles a day for the past couple days (just now saw these warnings), but this takes around a hour because he gets distracted easily and stops to walk occasionally. When we are actually running, its about 8 mins/mile and we always stay on grass which shows how much we stop and how much we walk. Is this bad for him and should I stop doing it and just wait another 9 months or will he be ok?

Thanks!

EDIT: Also, if I should wait to run him, is there a distance that is too long to walk a puppy or is an hour ok?

I would stop doing it running all together, it can damage their joints. Running on a leash because it is structured does not give the pup a chance to stop and take the breaks that they need when they need them. You can let your pup run in a backyard or a secured area because they can take breaks when they want and won't feel like they Have to continue with you.

The general rule of thumb for walking puppies is 5 minutes per month of age so your pup can go for 15 minutes walks. This is per walk so you could go 15 mins morning, afternoon and night. Then at 4 months you could go for 20 mins and so on...

Oh wow, I've been working him way too hard in that case. Thanks for the advice.

No problem Smile Just lay off a little and enjoy him! Mental stimulation can also go very far in tiring them out in place of those runs Smile

Enjoy your pup while he's little, it won't last long :p
